Windows Explorer locking up with new files

Hello. Occasionally, when I am writing a new large file such as a video file, Windows Explorer will lock up on me when I access the folder. Until I go into Safe Mode and delete the offending file, I can access the folder momentarily before it locks up again. I can sometimes view the folder, but if I scroll through the folder, the folder will lock up on me.

I can sometimes get around this problem by changing the view characteristics of the folder. I have folders arranged by name and grouped by file type. If I don't group by type, I can access the folder. I can't tell if scrolling through the folder would cause the same problems because without grouping, there is no need for me to scroll.

How can I fix this problem with Windows Explorer? Thanks. I have Windows 10 Version 2004.

This is just a shot in the dark but I used to get this when I habitually changed video file extensions to be able to cope with a limitation of my video editor.

Are you having to do anything like that or are the problem video files using the extension that would be expected for their file type?

I think you are saying that there is no problem when the problem files are not present. What about the source files they are made from?

Thank you for your reply. I'm sorry that it has taken so long for me to reply. Unfortunately, it doesn't have to be a video file that causes this problem. I have had problems with document files as well. As it has happened several times since I posted this thread, I have noticed that I can avoid going to safe mode to delete the file if I shift the view from grouping by file type and then deleting the file. There had been some times in the past when the folder would lock up on me just when I accessed the folder, but lately, it has only been with the grouped view.

It doesn't necessarily need to be from any particular source. I downloaded a YouTube video of some professional baseball moments and ran into this problem. I deleted the files and downloaded those files again without problems. It is almost as if my hard drive might have an issue (maybe writing over a bad sector?). Every time I delete the file, maybe the computer writes the file over another part of the hard drive. What seems to go against this thought is that it only happens with certain folder views with scrolling involved.

Thanks for your input. I hope you or someone else might be able to come to thought as to what might be causing the problem. I haven't been able to scan my hard drive with SpinRite as I am having issues changing my boot drive to load my disc which has SpinRite on it.

We spell our first name the same way. Fancy that. Don't see that too often.

    Denis,

Check out the hard drive[s] using the built-in utility then.

Personally, I would also run SFC-DISM [Option 3]

I assume your display driver & your bios are up to date.

Thanks for the tip. Both methods did not yield any errors. I am very puzzled at the cause of this issue. I can't find a definite pattern as to why this occurs.
