PC Won't reboot from a Win 10 Restart but is fine from power on

Win 10 Pro, 64 bit. Fully up to date with all updates.

    Motherboard: ASUS Prime B350-Plus B350

    CPU: AMD RYZEN 5 1600 3.2GHz (3.6Ghz Turbo) 6 Core - 12 Threads - 16MB Cache

    RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB DDR4 2666Mhz

I've recently noticed that if I select Shutdown and Restart, my Win 10 PC will close down just fine then attempt to restart (the screen goes black as normal) but then the PC immediately hangs while displaying nothing. It won't even attempt to boot into Windows.

I can then power off via the button and back on, it then boots just fine.

If I just do a Shutdown to power off that of course works and on power on it boots back into Windows.

Is this restart problem likely to be a hardware fault or something to do with Windows 10 ?

    Hello @WinTenner

Could you get CPU-Z and on the Mainboard tab, look and tell us what BIOS version you're on? The .zip version is the portable version.

    CPU-Z | Softwares | CPUID

Also, what was the last thing you were doing BEFORE you started having this problem?

Lastly, please go to Settings > System > About ...and scroll down and tell us what Windows version and OS build you are on?

    Thanks, have done that and it's BIOS version 5407 - AMD AGESA Combo-AM4 1.0.0.4 - dated December 31st 2019

I see on the ASUS site that the latest version is 5602 dated July 31st 2020

PRIME B350-PLUS Driver & Tools | Motherboards | ASUS Global

Should I try the newest version?

Note: this restart issue is something new, up until recently there wasn't a problem.

If you're on Windows version 2004, the BIOS "might" make a difference, otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.
When I saw how long the list of BIOS versions was... I thought that if you were on a really old BIOS version, it might matter.

It would really help to know "exactly" which version of Windows 10, you are on.

Also, there is another setting in the BIOS, on the Boot tab. Something about how many seconds to wait after POST, to start booting the computer. I'm on an ASUS X570 motherboard, and I felt the default setting was too fast. So I slowed it down to 5 seconds.

Other things you might want to try would be....

Open a command prompt as Admin, and type: sfc /scannow
There is a space between sfc and /scannow. It shouldn't take long to run... about 5 minutes.
It will check all the Windows files, to make sure none have gotten corrupted, etc. IF it finds any bad files it will try to repair them.

@zbook - thanks, have checked and Fast Startup is already off.
@Ghot - I've not yet updated to Win 10 2004 (I have the apparently common problem where it fails to install and haven't had the time to look into that yet other than noting that the 'fix' could be one of multiple things to try).

The version of Windows I'm on is Win 10 Pro, version 1909 (OS build 18363.657).

I've tried the system scan that you suggested and that didn't find any issues.

I'll look into the BIOS suggestion and the wait time.

You may want to consider an In-place upgrade then. It will accomplish two things... get you on v2004, and fix any Windows problems, you may be having.
Actually, it will help troubleshoot your problem too. A successful In-place upgrade will pretty much eliminate Windows as a cause of the problem.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and choose: Create installation media for another PC... then choose: ISO image ...and save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.
    Download Windows 10 ISO File

For older ISO image versions, go here instead...
    Download Windows 10 ISO File

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will look like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Upgrade option and tell it to save your programs and data, when it asks.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

Thanks very much, sounds like it's worth a try (might not be able to delve into it for a few days though as I'm bogged down with work and need the PC fully functional).

Will this in-place upgrade affect 3rd party software such as the Classic Start Menu that I use?

No. It will leave programs and data intact. It might undo some personalizations, but other than that you'll be fine.
I just did it about 1.5 months ago, cause the update to 2004 wouldn't work for me.
The In-place upgrade worked fine and on my comp, took less than 30mins.
