Increasing Vram in Regedit, any down sides?

So I'm reviewing this 3D scanner for my YouTube channel and I'd like to use it with my laptop rather than my desktop. On my laptop the scanner software says there's not enough video memory. I found a YouTube video that explains pretty well how to increase this in the registry. I was wondering if there's any down side to doing that, like could it harm the laptop?

    It's a 2017 HP Envy x360 2-in-1, 16GB ram. Intel UHD graphics.

    Display Adapter properties says
Total Available Graphics Memory: 8256 MB
    Dedicated Video Memory: 128MB

The scanner software I want to use says it requires minimum 2GB Video ram.

Here's the video tutorial I found.
Dedicated Video Ram Increase | ( VRAM of laptop and PC in Windows 10) - YouTube

This whole thing bugs me since I mainly use my laptop for 3D animation, sculpting, modeling, etc. So the software should work fine to my knowledge.

It should be fine. All that does is spoof the dedicated video memory. It LIES, so a program or game that requires more dedicated video memory will install, run... etc.

Reading about it at Intel, they say create a DWORD, not a QWORD
Solved: Is it possible to increase the amount of dedicated video ram? - Intel Community

In my experience of thousands of registry edits, I can't remember ever needing to create a QWORD.
In fact, of all the results I found by Googling: HKLM software Intel GMM, the ONLY one that says QWORD is that video you found.
All the other sites with directions for this, say create a DWORD.
I would do that, then reboot and see if it works.

And no it won't hurt anything. This registry edit just LIES to your scanner software. It's not really changing anything, hardware wise.

It's just the integrated grfx on an Intel CPU.

Alright, thanks a bunch. I'll try it out when I wake up in the morning.

Just follow the video, but create a DWORD, not a QWORD.

Remember, you'll have to reboot, for it to take effect.

IF you already have a GMM folder (key), you won't have to create one. Apparently, some comps have it, some don't.

Either way you'll still have to create the DWORD (in the GMM folder (key)), named... DedicatedSegmentSize ...and set it to 512

When you're all done it should look like this...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Intel\GMM ...with the new DWORD DedicatedSegmentSize ...set to 512

Aw well it didn't work. I tried 512 and then 1024. Windows Display settings now says I have 5120MB but the scanner software still says 0GB VRAM. Thanks anyway, it was worth a shot.
