I'm very sure that posting on an MS thread has the same visibility within MS organization as posting on our threads. That is NONE.

Strange that it impacts some machines so consistently and other machines are not impacted. I have a wide variety of devices, laptops to desktops, antiques to modern and within my house it only impacts an HP i3 built for Windows 7 laptop. My workaround for it was to fall back to 1909. Now there is a workaround if there every was one.
Not sure how you got so lucky. It effects all my machines since all run Windows 10 and use WU. Not sure why everyone isn't effected.

And as I mentioned when I tried what should have been a simple workaround it resulted in my computer needing the OS repaired. And now it seems to be heading there again.

    Thanks bru

No Paul, the way things got presented I missed your post. Thanks for following up.

Yes by all means post a link. I did not do the powercfg /requests on this machine yesterday but my client said this just recently reappeared. So I checked update history and sure enough there was the the .net preview with a failed status on Nov 1, 2020.

I tried calling client to do the powercfg and windows update stop but wasn't able to reach.

    PowerCFG

This can be very useful in situations like this.

I have written a Batch script that will give you a lot of Power Configuration / Management Information that might prove useful, just download and run the Batch script below . . .

    > Attachment 310019.

It will create a PowerCFG_Detailed_Analysis.txt file on the Desktop.

It will also create the following files on the Desktop . . .

    Battery-Report.html
    Energy-Report.html
    System-Power-Report.html
    System-Sleep-Diagnostics.html

I hope you find it useful!

bru, can I ask, do you get a failure on the .net preview updates?

My client had such a failure but what I found interesting is that he does not look for or install any updates on his own. The window updates that happen in the background, Home Edition, get a pass but nothing else. He doesn't even know how to get to the "Check for Updates" button.

So why did the preview update even try to install, it shouldn't have, only Patch Tuesday updates

Thank you Paul. With lockdown not sure when I will be able on clients machine. I will run on one of my devices to see capabilities.

I would prefer WU to run in the background too. I look at WU settings, I don't check for updates. I don't know if just opening it messes it up but I've had all kinds of problems for months. I believe .NET update installed ok on several machines this month.

The Batch script does NOT change, alter, or update anything. It is just for informational [ diagnostic ] purposes to see if there is anything that jumps out that could be causing problems.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks zbook.

I'll look into these. Some I've already covered and some are covered by Paul's script.

There is a lot of correlation with this thread and my clients issue. When I finally get to run powercfg / requests I will now if I have identical match. You can also see the multi page MS post, all with the same condition(s).

I ran sfc, no integrity, ran chkdsk, no issues.

I should have looked rather than trying to remember. Looks like .NET is just installing now.

One other computer shows both KB and .NET ready to install pending restart so WU worked it seems. Another shows .NET ready pending restart but KB Pending Install so I hope no issues.

On the problem computer I just had to restart again. I think it is trying to install the KB and it is messing it up. Hate MS.

Now out of habit if my computer doesn't go to sleep I check WU. Sometimes WU has installed an update and is waiting for me to restart the computer. After Windows restarts and completes the install, sleep is normal again.

There was a couple time a few months ago that a WU install failed. I had to stop and restart the Windows update service. After that the problem update install was able to complete successfully.

Even though I have found workarounds for this doing it should have been unnecessary. The average user would expect this to all be automatic. He might be not even be aware of any problem or if he was not know what to do about it.
