System shutsdown abruptly
after running for a while, my laptop just powers off with no warning without regard to what was being run. My current suspicion is overheating, but how can i track the true cause.

Have seen Notebooks/Laptops do that and usually it was because the vents/heat sink for the fan were plugged, did take some disassembly to get at them to clean. Might try canned air first, blow it out.
1) update the specs in the "my computer" section:
System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums
In the left corner below in your post you find 'My System Specs'.
After clicking it you can find a link a little below that says 'Update your System Spec', click on this link to get to the page where you can fill in your system specs.

Include PSU. cooler, case, peripherals and anything attached to the computer by wired or wireless (mouse, keyboard, headset, printer, xbox, USB wireless network card, etc.)
2) track the events in the reliability monitor and / or event viewer
Reliability Monitor is the Best Windows Troubleshooting Tool You Aren’t Using
3) If the laptop is a Dell or HP run the on board or website hardware diagnostics
4) Choose one of the temperature monitoring software applications: Speecy, HW monitor, Speed fan:

I am in process of taking it apart. Since it was new, i have added 4 gb memory and swapped the 320gb disk to a 1T disk. That maybe generating to much heat.
Dell Inspiron N7010. New drive is hdd. Tried it with only one memory board, still failed. Usually take a couple of hours.
And i cant get the system apart.
Run the Dell website custom diagnostics overnight with these checked boxes:
https://www.dell.com/support/home/en...n7010/diagnose
Code:Performance Bluescreen analyzer Hard drive Hard drive stress Memory Memory stress Motherboard Processor Processor stress System stressCode:Video capture Video card Video card stress
If the computer cannot open windows then test with:

Take pictures with a camera or smartphone camera and upload images into the thread.
There are more rigorous tests that can be performed pending the above tests / results.
Will start those tests in about 10 min.
Thanks.

but have to load support assist first. I rebuild w10 with minimum stuff.
I believe most laptops have a built in safety feature that they will turn themselves off when the temperature gets to a certain danger point to try to save them from damage.
