    PC fresh install - crashes/freezes - windows 10

    What is the problem?:
The problem in short: after a freshly installing windows, the pc will suddenly start rebooting. After reboot you will get back to windows login. It is possible to login, however shortly after you login and for example you go to the windows updates it reboots again.
This is the currently loopy state the pc is in. (Freaking annoying)

    Tried:
    - Reimage, reinstall
    - Chkdsk,
    - Sfw,
    - Windows reset,
    - Windows start up repair,
    - Hardware checks,
To be sure it is not a hardware issue, I have installed Ubuntu 18 on the same ssd as a dual boot. In ubuntu everything works fine.
Safe mode works fine as well. The reboots are from “windows rebooting after failure” when turning the feature off. The pc will just freeze and that’s it. After a clean install I used safe mode.
    In safe mode I tried:
    - Device manager. Seeing if there were errors. Nothing which would explain the freezes.
    - Installing the nvidia drivers.

I stopped right here for now, (really really done with all this). Will continue later the day. However Hoped to get someone's opinion about this matter in the hope I missed something obivious.

Hi, as prompted by the forum when you wrote your post to save us asking, what is your Windows build?

    History: (often omitted by posters)
    a. Was the PC previously running Win 10 without problems?
    b. If so, which build was it running?
    c. What was the reason for a clean install?

Considering the clean installation: please state how you did this. For example:
Did you create a bootable medium using the MS media creation tool, then boot your PC from that, then delete all partitions comprising your Windows installation?

Specs. Click My computers under my post. This information is missing for your PC. Don't even know if it's a laptop or a desktop. There is a tutorial to help if needed.

Roughly how old is your PC? Please provide a link to its drivers download page.

    What is Sfw?

    Hardware checks,
Presumably you have checked your disk(s) - SMART params, surface scan; checked your RAM. Please confirm.

To anyone contemplating posting more- I suggest we wait for this info first.. thanks!

First off all sorry for the missing information,(really tired) and don't get me wrong but I have been spending quite the time and effort on this matter. Which is getting me frustrated to the bone.
So thank you for the fast reply.

I didn't answer de version number, simply because it is the latest update (I don't know which version that is).

I am doing a clean install because it had a old hdd with windows 10 running. I don't know which version since I never look which version is installed to be honest here. The pc was quite slow and disk kept hitting 100%.

In the mean time I got a new ssd for my main pc. Placed to old ssd from my main pc in the pc in question.
Clean install from windows and first everything seemed to be working but after sometime the above state issues occured.

I hope this is the info you are looking for.

    • Operating System
    o Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
o I think this is the version: Build 18362.19h1 release 190318-1202
    • CPU
    o Intel Core i7 @ 3.50GHz
    o Haswell 22nm Technology
    • RAM
    o 8.00GB
    • Motherboard
    o MSI Z97 GAMING 5 (MS-7917) (SOCKET 0)
    • Graphics
    o Standard Monitor (1360x768@64Hz)
o NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (MSI)
    • Storage
    o 465GB Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB (SATA (SSD)) 27 °C
    • Optical Drives
o No optical disk drives detected
    • Audio
    o NVIDIA High Definition Audio

I install windows via bootable media, remove all partitions and install windows on a new partition.

In the post I describe that ubuntu is working fine same for safemode. So I presume things like RAM or a Disk failure are ruled out. I see that hardware checks are a bit vague indeed.
    I have done:
    - Ram check,
    - In linux stress tests CPU and GPU
    - Removed components and tried if there was a differend result.
    - Did multiple scans with different tooling.

Only thing remaining in my opinion are drivers but not sure which or what.
I have only installed the newest nvidia driver the rest are simply windows default

    18362.19h1 release 190318-1202
I don't understand this build number, I'm afraid.
Build 1903 is 18362.xxx Build 1909 is 18363.xxx - so it looks as if yours is a 1903 build.

Win key + R, winver or Settings, About.

    Again:
    History: (often omitted by posters)
    a. Was the PC previously running Win 10 without problems?
    b. If so, which build was it running?

Roughly how old is your PC? Please provide a link to its drivers download page.
Is it self-built? If not, what is the model?

MSI Z97 GAMING 5 - seems to be from around 2014. Is that right?
    Drivers:
Support For Z97 GAMING 5 | Motherboard - The world leader in motherboard design | MSI Global
    - seems to have support for Win 10 x64.

Safe mode works fine as well.
    - given you have checked the hardware etc, tends to suggest driver incompatibility. Hence my question about which build you were running previously, whether it was Win 10 etc...

Look at your Reliability Monitor and explore the red x's.

Run Whocrashed (free) and see if that spots anything. (Hopefully it runs in Safe Mode).

Try uninstalling or removing your graphics card completely and see how your system behaves.

Again thanks for the fast reply, I’m trying my best to answer all the questions.

Again: History: (often omitted by posters)

I hoped it was clear by telling:
“I am doing a clean install because it had an old HDD with windows 10 running. I don't know which version since I never look which version is installed to be honest here. The pc was quite slow and disk kept hitting 100%.”
It is one of my self-build pc’s, it is one build from my previous main pc. However it has run windows 10 multiple times with the current hardware except from the disk/now SSD. Only this time instead of a SSD, it was running with an old HDD for the time being. It didn’t ran smooth since the disk was always 100% usage.
The mainboard, CPU and ram are old, like 7 years. GPU 3 weeks, power and SSD no more than 1.5 year.
    - Geforce Driver | NVIDIA
    - Support For Z97 GAMING 5 | Motherboard - The world leader in motherboard design | MSI Global
Like I sad before, I don’t use any drivers from the vendors website. I normally let windows install updates first, then see which drivers need updating. However if I take updates it is for mainboard and GPU.

    =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

I can only presume it was the same build running then however it is possible 1 build earlier(don’t know when the last update/change was.)
Like you already mentioned the windows 10 x64 is supported. And it is possible I have bought it in 2015 so 2014 seems the case.

    =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

    The red X, you mentioned:
    - Multiple times, Not proper shutdown
    - 1 time, Desktop Window Manager – APPCRASH
    - 1 time, Windows logon user interface host – stopped working

    =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Crash dump runs fine in safemode,
    However the tool states:
    No valid crash dumps.

    =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

After typing al the above I tried to use the pc without the GPU.
And it seems almost certain it has something to do with the video driver.
I have removed the NVDIA driver installed, reinstalled the GPU. Booted again.
    No issue.
Conclusion could me the every time I installed windows it installed the graphics driver which has this issue? I’m not sure yet…
Gone test with an older driver.
Will post as soon as possible with correct driver.

For now again thanks for your assistants and most of all patience.

That was a lucky but slightly informed guess- you may need to use an older driver. See if you can do research on your MOBO and the video driver.

The reason for understanding the previous build number is that you may have had a different set of drivers if your previous major build was older. e.g. 1809.

I don't see or have missed a clear statement that you had no problems before doing a clean install.

Note that your current build number is available thus:
Win key + R, winver or Settings, About.

If the crash is dramatic, there won't be time for Windows to log anything, of course.

Go to Windows Update: View update history.
--- In the quality updates section of the following page to View update history, click on the link for the most recent Cumulative Update
You will get a similar report as
    --- April 21, 2020—KB4550945 (OS Builds 18362.815 and 18363.815)
    --- Version: 1903-OS Build 18362.815 and 1909-OS Build 18363.815

If you have 1903, your winver will show Version 1903 (OS 18362.815)
If you have 1909, your winver will show Version 1909 (OS 18363.815)
Please run winver as has been requested.

You can create a winver desktop shortcut if you'd like
Right click on your desktop, click on "New", click on "Shortcut", enter winver for the location, next type any name "title" you want, click on Finish.

I'll say it again... if you fail to post system specs expect guesswork answers. See my signature below.

As for finding Windows version and build number the simplest way via the "Run" command - Open "Run" and type "winver" (without quotes) and a popup window like this will give you both version and build number....

    PC fresh install - crashes/freezes - windows 10-winver.png

It took longer to type this sentence than to open Run and type winver

BTW the latest non-insider build is 18363.836
