I can set the Bios on my Z170 to Legacy & UEFI so that`s how I leave it, it came that way and I never had to change it. When I hit F8 I bring up my boot menu, and then I just choose my non UEFI usb stick. It gives me 2 items in the list of choices, a UEFI choice and a normal looking USB stick choice. I just choose the normal looking one.

And yes, your SSD has to be initialized as MBR to install in Legacy mode, if not you`ll get the dreaded "Windows can not be installed to this disc message" if it`s GPT, you have to convert it to MBR.

I`ll dig up the picture of the Boot Menu shot.

I would make the 500GB SSD 1 partition, no need to split it up, unless you really want to.

And your storage drives can both be GPT, like my setup. They can be converted safely if you want to, there are tutorials here explaining how, but I think Partition Wizard can do it safely without losing any data, but for the time being, leave them alone.

I have my Z170 and my X299 both setup this way, the only difference is the X299 has 1 more 4TB drive.

Okay, I think I'm getting it. I just checked my BIOS on this WIN 7 machine and it has the "CSM" enabled, and the "Boot Device Control" is set to... UEFI and Legacy OPROM, like so....

Now, I made the Win 10 DVD (ISO) from MS's Media Creation Tool (it fit on a single layer DVD, btw) (64 bit only), So I should just make sure my BIOS is set like I circled in RED, and then install Win 10 from the DVD?
And that will get me an MBR partition?

Both are ASUS-AMD motherboards. one is the old 990FX chipset and the new one, that isn't quite here yet, is the new x570 chipset.

Btw... this is what I just bought on April 29th. So far only the CPU is here.

    System Builder - Ryzen 7 3700X 3.6 GHz 8-Core - PCPartPicker

I won't be able to afford the "RTX 2060 super" until July.

/ee The problem is, that I can only run one comp at a time, and I don't have a smart phone. So I won't be able to look anything up online, after I disassemble this Win 7 computer.

Iirc, to install Win 7 without the reserve partition, I had to make the 500GB Velociraptor drive, one giant partition, and then it installed with no Res partition.

    Exactly

It will be a trial and error for you, but you`ll get it.

Well then... I guess this is resolved... I hope. If the tracking numbers are at all correct, I will be putting this new comp together this Friday. The bad part is, that because of the coronavirus, I can't just call ASUS when I have a problem. :/

Btw, here is my current system. I'll be keeping the case, PSU, and the storage drives. (Will keep the vid card till July as well).

My boot menu shot from the Z170, you can see the 2 USB stick choices. I would scroll down and choose the Lexar USB stick, not the highlighted option. The DVD drive is at the bottom. My X299 doesn`t even have a dvd drive, don`t need it.

Yeah, I just set the boot order in the BIOS to optical drive first. Then SSD will be 2nd.
I never turn the comp off so...how long it takes to boot isn't an issue for me.

I also use Acronis True Image backup software, a lot... which is another reason I leave the optical drive, as the 1st boot device.

Actually I think that's my Titan (700 series Titan). I ran that when I was folding@home. Afterwards I switched to the 780 Ti which was just a bit faster. But they looked the same, from the edge.

Btw, I appreciate the help. Nice to see another reserve partition hater.

Yeah, I checked out your whole album, nice comp. I notice you have the Dominator Platinum as well. Nice RAM :)

I pretty much quit gaming. I still play some really old games. Nothin' too fast anymore.

Thanks, all the specs I have listed now are correct for each PC, there are a lot more pictures of the Z170 transformation at SevenForums, I think you`d have to be a member to view them, not sure.

Glad I could be of help
