Win 10 : What is this green bar at the top of windows explorer?

Recently reinstalled win 10 on a fresh SSD and I noticed there is a green bar at the top of windows explorer. It looks like the loading bar, but it NEVER goes away, it just slowly creeps to the edge and stays there FOREVER.

It seems to do this if I use the "large icons" view, even if the folder has almost nothing in it. For example, 10 jpeg files in a folder, all thumbnails have loaded and the green bar still stays there forever.

I have no network drives mapped.

Does anyone know how to figure out what is causing this and stop it?

It's basically a rendering (or populating) progress bar as it shows the progress before items like say images in a folder will be fully rendered. Or it could show the progress of Explorer being fully populated before any one item can be full utilized... say reading into a drive.

That said, if the bar is sticking like you say you might look at your drive. BTW how full is the drive in question?

Its a brand new WD Green SSD, 480gb and most of it is unused.

It looks like the green bar is always there if i have view set to "large icons". It does not appear in list view. The problem is that the green bar never goes away, even though all the thumbnails have loaded and there are less than 10 jpeg files in the folder.

What is causing this?

Does the bar show on all folders or just the "Documents" folder as shown in your image? If only the documents folder, you might look to see what's there - a ton of images for example?

Oh... One thing to try is to open Disk Cleanup and delete "Thumbnails" by checking the box and hitting OK.

It shows in every folder as long as I have it set to "large icons". Even if there are less than 10 images in the folder. Infact, it even shows up in the "this PC" view even though there are obviously no images in the folder :

Just tried disk clean up and deleted the thumbnails. No luck. Green bar still present.

Hmm... seems like your drive reads are slow. How new is the drive?

BTW I just set my files to large and extra large and I get the green rendering bar, but it's fairly quick and goes away. This is whether I'm on my NVME driver or SATA SSD drive.

Out of curiosity can you post your Device Manager image? Oh and this might help - How to Upload and Post Screenshots and Files at Ten Forums. It would also help if you filled out your system specs.

As I said, its brand new. Its like 2-3 days old. Everything has already loaded, so I dont get what its trying to load....

Are you able to view the screenshots I have already posted in this thread by the way?

Is your data redirected to the other drive? Documents, pictures, etc?

Yeah, I can see the image. Do me (you) a favor and disconnect the passport drive temporarily and see what happens.

It's not trying to load anything. It's just rendering images real slow.

Also, for testing purposes, download CrystalDiskMark from the Microsoft Store. And run it to see what numbers you get.

Unplugging the external didnt do anything. After I restarted, the green bar stopped showing up...not sure what might have done it. I did try disabling search indexing for the SSD (via indexing options and in the drive properties) and uninstalling onedrive.

Edit : I think i tested the wrong disk with crystal mark, hold on.

Crystal disk info just says the SSD is in "good" condition.
