    File Explorer search history

In any Windows 10 File Explorer window, a search bar can be found under the ribbon to the right side. When placing the cursor in this field, a drop down list appears of all previous searches. It can become quite long over time. I've been unable to find how that archived search history list can be cleared/erased. Can anyone help?

    Hello Rich,

You should be able to use an option in the tutorial below to clear your search history in File Explorer.

Thanks for you reply Brink. I read the link you provided but it doesn't seem to apply. My windows build is 18363 which seems earlier than those the solutions mentioned. I see a link in my settings screen to upgrade my edition of Windows, which I guess I'll have to try. Do you know of any concerns I should be aware of when upgrading my Windows edition?

I would always recommend to back up anything you don't want to lose just to be safe.

Otherwise, it should go pretty smoothly other than how long it may take.

On second thought, I was under the impression Windows should update automatically?

My guess is the comment about build numbers has been added as a general comment about Windows search, and isn't intended to limit the content of the tutorial to those builds- Shawn- is that correct?

You shouldn't need to do that to be able to clear your search history. For example here's mine in build 1903 (see option 3):

Correct. Not all the options in the tutorial require a specific build or higher.

Option 3 should still be available.

Normally, Windows 10 will automatically download and install feature updates unless something (ex: metered connection) prevents it. Optional updates will need to be manually allowed.

    Hi Dalchina,
My file explorer doesn't have a tab labeled "search".

Do you see the Search tab in the ribbon if you type something in the search box, or after doing a search?
