Automatic Repair - Your PC did not start correctly

For the past 2 days my wife's laptop has been giving the "Your PC did not start correctly" error. Choosing "Restart" has always worked ... so far.

The most obvious recent change: I upgraded the laptop from 1903 to 1909 last Friday, but there were at least 4 unproblematic boots after the upgrade before this error started happening. "sfc /scannow" reports no integrity errors.

There is one obvious driver problem. "Insyde Airplane Mode HID mini-driver" shows an error in Device Manager. I'm pretty certain this is a long standing error because I remember trying to find a solution a couple years ago. A search today showed the same thing as past searches - symptoms that don't match our symptoms (we have none) and solutions involving downloading a driver from other than the vendor (which I don't trust.) Anyway, I have no idea if this is related to the "did not start correctly" problem, and I'm reluctant to mess with something I don't understand.

    Any suggestions for fixing this?

    First try this

in searchbox type cmd then choose administrator mode

open a administrator command prompt and type sfc /scannow

hopefully this should correct the problem .
    next type dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    please post if this helps

If you/ your wife don't use airplane mode you could disable the device which should remove it from the equation while troubleshooting, open device manager, locate the problem device, right-click and choose disable device.
After disabling the device do as thomaseg1 suggests to try to fix any file issues. If the problem persists you should schedule a disk check tutorial here Drive Error Checking in Windows 10

As I said in my original post, I have already done that and it found nothing.

Hmm. I didn't know DSIM /restorehealth would do any good if sfc found no errors. I'll give it a try.

I'm running into my ignorance here. I didn't know there was an airplane mode device. I thought it was just code that turned off the wireless radio. I don't want to do anything to mess up the wireless support on the laptop.

Well the only reason I mentioned it is because you said there was a driver listed in device manager showing an error. In theory airplane mode shuts of wireless, blue tooth etc, there is a guide to it here What is the Point of Airplane Mode?
You should read that then decide if it is worth disabling the driver for trouble shooting or not.

I just brought up the laptop to do more checking and the "Automatic Recovery" problem has disappeared Very strange!

Since I had the laptop up, I decided I might as well tell Windows to update the Insyde Airplane Mode HID driver. I was very surprised when it actually found a newer driver ... and found another device (or pseudo-device) associated with the wireless support and installed the driver for it. (Why didn't that happen during the 1909 upgrade?) Now there is no driver error being shown.

But fixing the driver problem happened after the start error disappeared so I doubt they were related.

I guess unexpected solutions are better than unexpected problems, but I don't really like either one. I've marked this thread "Solved", but I'm not going to be surprised if the problem reappears.
