Removing laptop hard drive and replacing with SSD?

I have a laptop (HP notebook 8 gig ram) running Windows 10 as a slow ring insider. I want to remove the hard drive which is as slow as treacle and replace it with an SSD.
This requires that I do a clean install of Windows 10 on the SSD ..... My question is this: I have a USB stick with Windows 10 1909 which is bootable, I have used this on my Desktop PC so I know it works, do I need to get the Windows 10 serial number from the laptop before removing and replacing the hard drive so it can be entered on the new SSD install, or is that unnecessary?
Any other advice would be welcome, thanks in advance.

If Windows 10 was already activated on the system, then when you do a clean install with the SSD on that same laptop, you will not need a key. Windows activation servers will recognize that it has been previously activated and activate it with a digital license. Even swapping the HD for an SSD won't be a problem.

You may wish to do a clean install of Win10 on the SSD, but it's not generally necessary. SSDs often come with cloning software, that allows you to copy the installation from the HD to the SSD. This assumes that the SSD is large enough to contain what is stored on the HD. (The SSD need not be as large, or larger, than the HD.)

The addition expense that is normally needed is an adapter to connect the SSD to a USB port on the laptop for the cloning.

As regards a clean install, laptops complicate the issue. Newer laptops have a Windows license code embedded in their BIOS. The Windows installer will use that to determine what version of Win10 is installed (home, pro, etc.). Older laptops had a system locked license code (SLP) that required a custom OEM install medium. If Win10 was installed as an upgrade, presumably there will be a digital license on Microsoft's servers. That should activate if the laptop is using its original motherboard. I'm a little hazy on the details, as I have never done a clean install of Win10 on a laptop that had an SLP or BIOS embedded license.

With Windows 10, even if your laptop shipped with another edition of Windows, it won't matter.

As an example, the laptop I am working on right now originally shipped from HP with Windows 10 Home. I upgraded it to Windows 10. That creates a digital license for Windows 10 with Microsoft. When I boot from Windows 10 media to perform a clean install of Windows, I simply select Windows 10 Pro and install as normal. When done, my machine activates with a digital license for Win 10 Pro even though the system originally shipped with the Home edition.

    Consider the following options:

    1) Find a SSD replacement
    Crucial System Scanner | Crucial.com

    2) Make a free backup image using Macrium:

Macrium Software | Your Image is Everything
Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

    3) Save the backup image to an external HD or the cloud

    4) Replace the HD with an SSD

    5) Restore the image

    6) Uninstall the HP drive guard

    7) In case you want to know or save licensing information you can run these links:

As stated in my first post, I want to remove the hard drive and replace with an SSD, then I want to install a clean copy of Windows 10 home.
The original hard drive runs Windows 10 slow ring insider version.
All I need to know is will my USB stick 1909 version load and run on the SSD when I install it without problems? Please read my first post for more info.
Sorry but I tend to get confused with to many options.

It should work just fine. If your current install uses a digital license it will auto initiate.
Just tel it you don't have a key during the install and continue. It will sort it out on first boot.

If you still want to use the laptop to run slow ring insider you could download an iso
from UUP dump and create an install usb with Rufus to take you straight to that.

Thanks to all of you, that is all I need to know ..... But there is one other thing, do I need to format the SSD or will the Windows install prompt me to do that during installation?

Windows 10 will take care of that upon initial install and will construct a new filesystem, as well.

    No worries.
