Not getting past log in page

    Hi,
My wife has a reconditioned Fujitsu server with Windows 10 instaled, it has been working okay until we switched it on this morning. It runs okay up to the login screen, when she logs in it goes to a black screen with a white arrow and stays like that. If I do a ctr, alt, del I get the options to log out, change user and also go to task manager. If I try change user and try the same user as there is only one account the same thing happens, if I try to go to task manager nothing happens.

Any ideas as to what the problem could be?
    Thanks,
    Gerald

Are you getting any disk activity during black screen, have you tried just waiting it out?

Next two things I would suspect, given it was Patch Tuesday this week is an update, either MS or a video driver.

If you are getting the power icon on your login screen, hold shift down and click restart.

This will take you into the advance startup options.

Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10

Within trouble shooting you should be able to uninstall the last update and or you can boot into safe mode and remove the video driver.

I would also seriously suggest using a tool like Macrium Reflect to image your machine going forward. A quick restore to a working time saves a lot of grief.

    Thanks for the reply,
There is disc activity with the black screen. I waited for an hour and did ctr, alt, del and tried a restart with the same results.
I had a word with the shop I bought it from 2 months ago and he thinks it is possibly an update problem, he is going to have a look at it over the weekend and let me know on Monday when to collect it. when I get it back I will put in a spare drive and clone the system drive.

I have a PC of my own and a laptop for when I go into hospital so I will not be without a machine.

    Okay.

You can removed the update yourself, Advance Startup Options, Trouble shoot > Advance Options > Uninstall Update

Rather than cloning I would do the imaging. It gets compressed and I keep multiple versions, sort of like a time machine.

You can browse these images and pull individual files which is another benefit.

You can use an internal drive but I'm always concerned about unwanted visitors and their ability to muck up a backup.

I do a little of both. I backup internally with a purchased copy of Macrium. This allows me to use Image Guard which prevents altering of backups. I also image to a NAS.

    Thanks for the reply,
I could not get to Advance Startup Options, Trouble shoot > Advance Options >. I took the PC to the shop, he could not get into Windows so he put the drive into another machine and saved my data from it then returned it to the original machine and had to instal Windows again. I collected it this morning and he told me he had 5 machines in that were having the same poblem, one of which he was repairing a fault on and when it instaled the latest update it went to the black screen. When I reconnected it and switched it on he had used my surname as the account name. I changed the account name okay but one folder under Users still has still got my surname as the folder name, is there any way to rename the folder to the account name?

    I wouldn't mess with this.

Just read this and see if this is what you want.

Change Name of User Profile Folder in Windows 10

I would add to the tutorial thread to ensure it is. I say I wouldn't mess as I've seen some messy threads.

Once you have things right please consider using Macrium.
