windows won't shut down; volume shadow copy the culprit?

    Hey,
    Windows 10 Pro version 1903
So my windows won't shut down.. or it will sometimes take ~4 minutes.

I've enabled verbose status messages, and I noticed how during one shutdown it showed everything being done normally, then it just said "shutting down" for minutes, and then it briefly said "stopping services" again, and then it finally shut down.

    List of things I've tried:
    • Tried shutting down in safe mode - immediate, like it should be.
    • I ran scans on all my hardware, no errors found.
    • Defragged my hdd (windows is on ssd though, so).
    • I've tried stopping all non-windows services manually before attempting to shut down, and it didn't change anything.
    • I've not installed anything new. No windows updates, no software. I've uninstalled a few pieces of software that had possibly automatically updated (dropbox, origin and twitch)
    • disable startup items
    • disable a few non-system drivers from loading

One thing I did notice was that the Volume Shadow Copy service has been having a few issues. I actually noticed this when I was uninstalling something else I thought might be the culprit and the uninstaller was trying to automatically create a system restore point; lots of software does this, and it's never been an issue, always been smooth. However, it failed to do so. Not just that once, it happened with another piece of software as well. Searching through the event log, I found a couple of possibly relevant errors:

    1:
Scoping unsuccessful for shadowcopy \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy2 with error 0x80070015.

    2:
    Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying for the IVssWriterCallback interface. hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied.. This is often caused by incorrect security settings in either the writer or requestor process. Operation: Gathering Writer DataContext: Writer Class Id: {e8132975-6f93-4464-a53e-1050253ae220} Writer Name: System Writer Writer Instance ID: {c12cea43-e8b7-46d5-b7df-31ac9c814846}

    3:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x8007045b, A system shutdown is in progress..

    4:
Volume Shadow Copy Service information: The COM Server with CLSID {4e14fba2-2e22-11d1-9964-00c04fbbb345} and name CEventSystem cannot be started. [0x8007045b, A system shutdown is in progress.]

Please help me troubleshoot this. I'm desperate.

    Hey,

The problem isn't fast startup. I only enabled that BECAUSE of this issue. I had it hard disabled before this issue started happening. But I need a way to be able to shut down my computer at the end of the day, so for now I've enabled it, because if I don't have it enabled, I can't shut my machine down.

I've already tried what you're suggesting, and the issue comes back as soon as I disable it.

I see you've started a new thread here. I'll post here what I did in the other one. Just for your consideration.

Have you considered an In-Place Repair? You won't lose anything, takes 20-30 minutes, and can cure some really weird ills.

I'd rather not go that route quite yet. You say I won't lose anything, but I suspect I'll lose a lot of (registry) tweaks I've applied throughout the years, no? I don't want to lose all the little things I've enabled/disabled in my windows to come undone. I'd rather manually fix i.e. volume shadow copy and then if none of that does anything then I might start considering more drastic measures.

My windows was running extremely smoothly for months before this randomly started happening out of literally nowhere, with no changes no nothing. I'm still worried it might be the ssd actually, even though I did use lenovo vantage to test it, and it passed on all tests.

Readings from the ssd are fairly limited though since it's an NVMe ssd from lenovo, so idno.
