    Intermittent Issue | Sleep Mode Freezing PC

    Hi all!

    I've been having this issue since updating to Version 1903. Entering sleep mode sometimes causes the pc to hang. A few times when this happens the fans start running at full blast.

    I tried all the following:

    - Updating BIOS;
    - Updating Graphics Driver;
    - Turning Power Management off in Intel MEI Device Settings;
    - Updating Intel MEI Drivers and Firmware, Updating Intel Chipset Drivers;
    - Turn off Hibernation mode; erasing hybersys.fil; consequently turning Hybrid Sleep off;
    - Running Power Troubleshooting, which simply applies a default 'Balanced' plan;
    - Selectively turned off high-CPU intensive services and the ones not needed on a Desktop PC;
    - Running a complete scan with MalwareBytes as well as Windows Defender to exclude malware/cryptominer;
    - Checking Event Viewer for Warnings and Errors related to system sleep/shut-down, and noticed that nothing is created past the 'hanging' point (trying to keep the screen on when sleep is supposed to start shows a frozen mouse pointer and an unresponsive system!);
    - Finally, reset the whole system to factory mode, and reinstalled Windows 10 v1903.

    Nothing has worked. I'm now tempted to call an exorcist, but before I light a few candles and dip my keyboard in holy water I'd like you experts to give this issue a shot. Internet is full with v1903 Sleep/Hibernation issues and I'm sure this version of Windows is to blame, but I wonder why is the issue intermittent and how can I find the culprit, since it's now becoming worse than a long - and boring! - game of Cluedo.

    Thank you in advance for your kind help! ^___^

    PS: It's worth mentioning that doing all of the above solving the PC not fully shutting down about 20% of the time and manual sleep mode freezing the PC every second time it was activated.

    I am not sure. This does also happen in a session in which no software was running. Today it happened after leaving the pc alone after using Microsoft Edge. Only resident services are the Adobe, HP, HP Omen and Logitech ones. I don't believe they are to blame as they worked *perfectly* before I installed v1903.

    Perform clean boot state to see any startup program and service causing the problem.

    How am I supposed to know? This is an intermittent issue. Not having it for 3 days does not warrant it won't return. What is your plan? Turning on and off each and every service? °_°

    Is there something more elegant to try before I resort to that? Let me reinstate that the issue is only with v1903.

    The fall Feature Update will be released sometime in November and hopefully it will fix this problem for you.

    For the time being, don't use Sleep mode. Use the Lock Screen and Power Options to turn off the screen and hard drive after a set amount of time.
    Which power plan are you using. I recommend using the Balanced plan.

    This thread has been quiet for a long time - but wanted to comment.

    I had the same issue described here, to a T. Every second attempt, going into sleep mode would crash me. I would hard reset, and then sleep would work once. And the next time it would crash me again.

    I was ready to pull my hair out. I updated my bios, forced windows to update, scoured through forums to apply changes to power settings, did support sessions with HP and with Microsoft support. None of it helped.

    What worked, was updating the driver for my realtek family gbe controller. Not the wifi adapter but the controller.

    I'll stress I had to go to the website and find the right one - I could not click the "have windows search for updated drivers" in device manager. That kept telling me it was up to date. I had to go to REALTEK

    And download and install the latest pcie controller.

    Anecdotally this issue only started once I was using Ethernet instead of wifi.

    To make your post more useful, fill out your system specs under My Computer so we know what other hardware you have.

    How to fill out System Specs for tenforums.

    See here: System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums

    Fill out as much as you can, especially the Manufacture and full model number of the computer if purchased or the system board if custom built.
