Black screen with cursor after Windows "repaired" my disc

    Hello,

    Hope someone can help.
My laptop was working perfectly, it's on the latest Windows 10 build.
Yesterday I saw I had a notification in the corner but action centre wouldn't open after clicking on it. Tried restarting explorer.exe, this didn't work and also messed up the touchpad, it wouldn't scroll anymore.
So I restarted the laptop, during restart it said it was scanning and repairing C: drive (maybe what the notification was about?).
Now when I log in I have black screen with a cursor, I can open task manager but it shows an error "taskmgr.exe - bad image, OLEACC.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing again..."
Pressing ok clears the message and allows me to use task manager. Have tried restarting explorer.exe, nothing happens and the "taskmgr.exe - bad image" error keeps popping up.
Have tried system restore, which failed.
Tried creating a new user, same problems occur.
Have tried chkdsk which found no errors.

I have got a Macrium reflect image from a few weeks back before I installed version 1903, but I was hoping there was something else I could try before attempting to restore the image as it would put me back on 1803.

    thanks,

I haven't found much that can fix a black screen issue.
Here's what I try at work:
    - reboot the system several times and let it sit for a while (up to 30 minutes) while at the black screen (you can try to use the computer during these times).
    - System Restore point
    - RESET with Keep My Files (access from the boot and it should be able to be accessed)

Beyond that I've spent weeks trying to fix these things without success.
Now (at work), we try the above steps and if they don't work - we wipe and reinstall Windows (so I'd suggest backing up the system and then restoring the Macrium image)

    Good luck!

It could be cause by corrupted graphic card driver uninstall it and install latest version of the driver.

These are trial and error steps:

    1) Boot into safe mode > report findings
Boot into Safe Mode on Windows 10

    2) If safe mode is without display problems the boot using clean boot
Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts

    3) Uninstall all non-Microsoft AV software

Thanks for the suggestions, I ended up using Macrium to restore an earlier image...

I was going to try and uninstall graphics driver, but device manager wouldn't work, it was showing what looked like a webpage connection error, something to do with Bing.

Tried safe mode - still had black screen.

So I decided to restore my Macrium image from the end of June, which seemed to work well, and I'm now back on 1803.
It then did a cumulative update for 1803 which took ages to download and install (nearly 2 hours!) and then about 15 minutes to restart.
But all seems okay now, it just means I've got to update to 1903 again at some point...
And this time I will do another back-up image after 1903 has installed...

Do another image BEFORE 1903 is installed - then overwrite it with the 1903 image after you're sure it's working well.
