Can a dual Win 7 & Win 10 sys drive avoid conflicts with data drives?

Please advise. I run a Windows 7 SSD system drive and several mechanical data drives. If I install Windows 10 on a new partition of my SSD can both operating systems read and write to my data drives without conflict?

They can both see then but there may be problems with permissions as they will be owned by the creator which may be the other pc so access will be denied. You can alter permissions to solve it you may have problems with activation if 10 is an update to 7 as both would use one licence

    Hi,
I'd setup separate partitions for each os to access.

I've been doing this since the days of Vista, without any real issues.

What I always did was to create an identical user set on each OS, set up the first OS to access the data drive(s) and test that all is working.

Once you have a Working OS go into the second OS and set the permissions for Access to the locations you need to access and add the required permissions.

When you are in either OS you will, when checking permissions, see a number of permissions that are shown as S....... these are the SID [Security ID] for the other OS's users. Make sure that you only modify permissions that have a "proper" UserName, and you should have few issues.

Some things to make things easier, in multi-drive data stores, is to allocate permissions as High up the Folder Tree as you can and let the system cascade down the tree

I have in the past had as many as five separate Operating Systems access the same data store, without Issue, [During Beta Testing Windows 7 was one]

I will say that although this is still possible, these days I would Use, and advise others to use, a Virtual Machine solution

    Hi,
Sharing partitions you run the risk of being prompted to do disk check especially on 7's side.

I personally wouldn't even dual boot 7 and 10 on the same disk
I use one of these for switching os's live is simplified

I tried this once and got the disk check issue. I think Windows 7 sees Windows 10 fast start hybrid shutdown state as a fault condition.

You might have been the one to tell me about these a couple years ago. I use these to dual boot Win 10 and Win 7 (games that won't run in Win 10). These are worth every penny. I have 3 of these so all my SSD's can be live switched.

I've never had any issues sharing data drives between different OS on the same computer. It's no different than file sharing between computers on a network. Turn hibernation off on Windows 10 and you won't have any disk checking issues:
    powercfg -h off

I've even used the same user folders moved to a data drive between OSs.

Me Too! on many occasions - My personal folders are always kept on a separate Data partition, and I install / Update / Upgrade /Reinstall as and when I need, to the system Drive/Partition, and use the Location feature to "move " the user Folders (so that the "New" install picks them up

Of course I never move the actual User Folder, just the Documents, Pictures Etc

Thank you all for the helpful replies. I can see that I have several options to consider but no hurry. I won't need Windows 10 until tax season or. If Windows 10 could play my cable company's protected content I wouldn't even need Windows 7.
