Recycling Bin controls are missing from Windows Explorer

Some weeks ago, the ribbon menu controls "Empty Recycle Bin", "Restore" etc. were gone. The bin icon is on the desktop but the Properties are not accessible.

Also noticed that after deleting a file in a folder, the image remains on the screen, showing a duplicate. The explorer must be refreshed to get an updated display. This behaviour always existed in the recycle bin, but it wasn't important and I figured that MS will get around to fixing it, but now it's worse.

    Try
Fix Corrupted Recycle Bin in Windows

    from
    Windows 10 Tutorial Index
    - worth bookmarking.

This behaviour always existed in the recycle bin
    - not a general bug as far as I know, but experienced by some if something messed up.

    Other diagnostic actions:
Create a new user for test purposes and compare.
If the same, Windows corruption. If ok, then specific to the user profile.

    Hello @ineuw,

Just to verify, is the ribbon showing in File Explorer for the Recycle Bin?

Hide or Show File Explorer Ribbon in Windows 10

If Properties is missing from the Recycle Bin context menu, then you might see if the tutorial below may be able to add it back.

Add or Remove Properties from Recycle Bin Context Menu in Windows

As a former Mac user for decades I'm 'content' with Windows 10 but certain aspects are just plain pathetic. Like emptying the bin but half the items still appear to be there seconds later. This is 2019, Microsoft. Sheesh.

That's not my experience, fortunately. Do you mean they do vanish eventually? Or not at all? (See fixes above).

Much thanks to all for reaching out. Tried all but none of the solutions helped.

A new Administrator account has the same problem. 'No Properties' and the Windows Explorer ribbon is missing the usual Recycle bin options.

Then I've taken the following steps:

    sfc /scannow found problems.

    dism /checkhealth repaired it.

chkdsk c: /v/f found and repaired three security errors.

    uninstalled some unimportant apps.

rebooted after each of the above.

This is not a major problem and I can certainly can live with it. I am sure that MS will wake up to the issue sooner or later, as their updates implemented many changes, both good and bad. I also tried to keep this post as short as possible although I spent the last five hours working on this and repairing errors listed in the event viewer.

Unfortunate. Doubt it's an MS problem affecting lots of users...

Whilst you could do an in-place upgrade repair install, you might as well just wait 'til you get build 1903.

Yes. If you close the window and reopen it -- they're gone. Only a very small amount of items go away, and so if you have 20 or more the others appear to have not deleted. Waiting a moment makes no difference. It's pathetic.

Suggests a problem unique to your PC - or are you experiencing this on multiple machines?

I run 2 laptops, and periodically run Ccleaner before disk imaging. This includes clearing the Recycle bin, which happens routinely without incident.

Are the files particularly large? Have you checked your disk recently?

Has this problem existing with different builds of Win 10 or only your current one? (My thought is perhaps the problem will disappear on any next upgrade- rather than suggesting e.g. an in-place upgrade repair install for this).

And do you experience the same if you create a new user for test purposes and log in and try as that user?
