Boot giving error "Reboot and select proper boot device"

Hello,

I just installed on my ASUS N56 Laptop, a new SSD Kingston 256GB replacing the DVD Bay, and going along with the old HDD drive.

I cleared all existing partitions and created a new one, and then, installed the OS in the SSD disk.

Everything was OK with the installation, but every time I shutdown the computer or reboot, I receive that error
"reboot and select proper boot device"
If I press CTRL+ALT+DEL, the computer reboots and boots normally.

The next time I do the shutdown or reboot, it happens all over again.

I Already reinstalled everything, fixed the boot with BOOTREC /FIXMBR.

Weirdly, the command BOOTREC /FIXBOOT gives an access denied.

Everything I searched for in all the forums, when this error occurred, the PC is broken, unable to boot anytime. My PC still boots.

Can someone help me?

Hello Point, I recently had a problem similar to yours. It also involved installing a new SSD (and then upgrading to the 1809 version of Windows 10) which required me to boot and then reboot before gaining access to the OS. I entered the BIOS to ensure the boot priority was correct and reset it a number of times - all to no avail. This went on over some 10 days and then by chance read a letter in Computer Active, which while not exactly addressing my problem encouraged me to give it a try as the action is completely reversible and could do no harm.
You enter Power Settings and then on the right under Related Settings click on Additional Settings. Now at Top Left click on What the Power Buttons do and on the page that appears click on Change Settings that are currently unavailable and then remove the tick from the box marked Turn on Fast Start-up. Save changes and close.
After this action I found that I could boot-up as normal and all was well.
As stated earlier it can do no harm and if of no use you can just go through the same sequence and return the tick to the Fast Start-up to return to where you were.
I took this action 3 days ago and have had no further problems.
Please excuse me if this doesn't resolve your problem but there is no harm in trying.

Normally, Windows should boot from hard drive. In the BIOS, if the first boot device is not set as hard drive but an external hard drive like a USB flash drive, the error would occur. So go into BIOS to check and change the boot device to hard drive as first priority if necessary.

Hi Freebooter, regarding my suggestion to 'Point' to re-set Fast Start -up. This was after I had a number of times ensured in the BIOS that the SSD was selected as the 'Priority/Default' for Start-up but to no avail. It was only after removing the tick from the Fast Start-up in Power Settings that boot-up operated as it should. Why that should be I don't know, all I know is it worked and therefore 'Point' may consider it worth a try.

When installing just delete all partitions and let the Windows installer configure the drive.

I had some trouble on a new laptop with fast start causing problems shutting down. Disabled it and all is well.

I had an older laptop that did not like the SSD brand I used, would not always boot. Tried a different brand and all was well. The problem brand was SanDisk SSD plus.

The Fast Startup disable option didn't solved the issue.

I already deleted all partitions and reinstalled. No solution.

The boot options are strange, this only happened when I tried to do the bootrec fix options. Before, the only options available were P0 and P2.

It is selected as the first boot device, as you can see in the screenshot. But, just for trying... I already tried the 3 options, none work

Try disconnecting all drives,except the ssd and see if that has any effect.
