    weird file appeared after update to ver1809


    Hi,
    I don't know if this is a problem for sure but I noticed that my C: drive suddenly lost 10 gb of free space. Looking at C: directory I noticed a folder titled 100 that used 9.91 gb that I didn't remember being their before; its subfolder 880 and 880 s subfolder has WINSxS and a number of other windows apps and dll files.
    I next checked the system WIN folder and it has Win SxS with very similar contents.
    Does anyone who updated to ver. 1809 have these files in a numbered file instead of a named file?? Should I remove it and regain the lost space on my ssd ?? Most of all what is it and why would update add it to C: drive??

    Is it C:\100 or is it further down the directory tree?

    the file in reference is C:\100 and appears at the top of the directory

    Yours is the first report I've seen of this. You might want to look at the properties of the 100 folder, security tab. See who has ownership of it. Other than that I'd say delete it or zip it and stick it some where for a bit then delete it if nothing bad happens.

    I checked permissions and I am logged as administrator; attempted to delete file failed, attempted move file failed. I attempted rename file ; seemed to work. closed file explorer reopened file explorer and found file renamed to original. seems very resistant to getting rid of it. noticed there are a lot of activex and flash files in there,could this be a virus???

    At a guess, it's a backup directory created by the update. It wouldn't usually be placed on the root of C:, though.

    I suggest trying disk cleanup. Use the "cleanup system files" checkbox.

    I remember reading something about Windows will apparently set aside 10 GB of hard drive space as reserved storage to minimize updates and upgrades from failing due to not enough space on the hard drive and prevent errors.

    I don't know if it's with 1809, however the April 2019 version will have it.

    No, it's not in 1809 (17763). Only Insiders have it at present....

    The Reserved Storage feature is available for testing to Windows Insiders running build 18298 or newer...
