Window 10: My PC won't start and SrtTrail.txt doen't help

    Hello,
My Windows PC gave the message that a repair was needed.
So I rebooted the machine and let repair do it's thing.

The Repair displayed the following messages:

Scanning and repairing drive (C:) 100%
    Preparing Automatic Repair
    Diagnosing your PC

    After that the message became:

Automatic Repair couldn't repair your PC
    Logfile: D:\WINDOWS\System32\Logfiles\Srt\StrTrail.txt

So i looked at the StrTrail.txt which contained the following text:
    Code:
Startup Repair diagnosis and repair log
    ---------------------------
    Number of repair attempts: 1

    Session details
    ---------------------------
    System Disk = \Device\Harddisk0
    Windows directory = D:\WINDOWS
    AutoChk Run = 0
Number of root causes = 0

    Test Performed:
    ---------------------------
    Name: Check for updates
Result: Completed successfully. Error code = 0x0
    Time taken = 0 ms

    Test Performed:
    ---------------------------
    Name: System disk test
Result: Completed successfully. Error code = 0x0
    Time taken = 0 ms

    Test Performed:
    ---------------------------
    Name: Disk failure diagnosis
Result: Completed successfully. Error code = 0x0
    Time taken = 0 ms

    Test Performed:
    ---------------------------
    Name: Disk metadata test
Result: Completed successfully. Error code = 0x32
    Time taken = 0 ms

    ---------------------------
    ---------------------------
So this didn't give any clue about what is wrong.

I found on this form the message Windows can not start after update, here is SrtTrail.txt Solved - Windows 10 Forums

Of which I tried the steps.
The steps were successful until step 4:
    Sfc /Scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=G:\ /OFFWINDIR=G:\Windows

    Which gave the message:
Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.

I then tried the next steps and they were successful until step 11) bootrec /fixboot
This gave the message: Access is denied.

The following steps didn't gave any error until step 19/20) Dir in c:\windows\system32\config\regback
It should display: default, sam, security, software, system etc
All of these files must be sizeable. If it displays zeros then abort.

All the files in c:\windows\system32\config\regback were 0 bytes.

So now I'm wondering what else can I try.

    Hopefully someone can help

    Hi, welcome to tenforums.

    1.

Tthis is something I've been considering. Having found what you saw (0 byte files) a couple of months back - with 1709- I found the scheduled task which performs the backup no longer had a trigger. I added one (on startup) and I get a daily update.

I've asked a couple of others to have a look and they also find this is no longer used. Indeed at this time it is uncertain as to whether it can be persuaded to work in 1803/1809.

    2. You might try booting your PC from a Win 10 bootable medium and, via Repair your PC, navigate to System Restore, and attempt that, if you have a usable restore point, and it actually succeeds.

    3. Here:
    Sfc /Scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=G:\ /OFFWINDIR=G:\Windows
    - were you certain that your Windows partition was indeed G: ?

    4. You may wish to boot your PC using a boot disk created from Kyhi's iso, available from the top of the Software and Apps section here.

Using that you can perform certain tests using software on the disk, examine and explore your partitions.

Hi harrie68. Welcome to the TenForums @harrie68

This thread seems to be an exact match to yours. Post 10 seem to be the ticket. Seems to have fixed 3 machines.

Windows can not start after update, here is SrtTrail.txt

Assuming you can get back in / up you need to look at creating a Macrium image.

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

Will be interested to see how it reacts when update is reapplied. You may have to hide update antil you can determine why it is killing boot.

Hide or Show Windows Updates in Windows 10

I have run the "Dism /image:\ /Get-Packages" which gives the following result:
    Code:
Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
    Version: 10.0.17134.1

    Image Version: 10.0.17134.165

The scratch directory size might be insufficient to perform this operation. This can cause unexpected behavior.
Use the /ScratchDir option to point to a folder with sufficient scratch space. The recommended size is at least 1024 MB.

    The operation completed successfully.
And this does not contain the "KB4053577"-package so I don't know what to do.

Were you able to open the Windows advanced troubleshooting menu on the computer?
Or were you only able to open the Windows advanced troubleshooting menu on a Windows 10 iso?

The hardware method to open the windows advanced troubleshooting menu on the computer is to power on and power off when you see the Microsoft Windows icon. Repeat this a second time. On the third power on allow it to progress to the windows advanced troubleshooting menu.

Were there any system restore points? Did they all fail?

What were the results of chkdsk /r?

    With these findings:

    Code:
Automatic Repair couldn't repair your PC
Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.
    bootrec /fixboot Access is denied.
    Last installed Windows update 7/11/2018
Use Kyhi boot rescue > backup all files to another computer > plan clean install
Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk - Windows 10 Forums

Once files are backed up you can perform some trial and error steps knowing the files are safe.

Please post the results of these steps:
    1) list disk
    2) list volume
    3) list partition

    4) bcdedit | find "osdevice"

    5) C:\windows\system32\config>
    6) dir

    7) Check to see whether these commands can or cannot be used in Windows RE:
    8) sc config trustedinstaller start=demand
    9) net start trustedinstaller

    10) Post the result of this command:
    Sfc /Scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=B:\ /OFFWINDIR=B:\Windows
(change the drive letters B: to the partition drive letter displayed in the result for this command: bcdedit | find"osdevice")

    11) Find another working computer that has the same Windows version and build > connect a flash drive > copy these files to the flash drive:

    C:\windows\system32\config\SAM
    C:\windows\system32\config\SYSTEM
    C:\windows\system32\config\SECURITY
    C:\windows\system32\config\DEFAULT
    C:\windows\system32\config\SOFTWARE
    C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack
