How To Open Last Window/Program (Maybe 3rd Party Program?)

Hi, so sometimes I have Notepad open and I close off the folder where that text file I opened it from. But then I accidentally close off Notepad, then a second later, I noticed that I needed that Notepad file open again.

Is there any other method of Searching/Going back to that folder with the text file was in, that I can just type something on the keyboard and re-open that specific text file. Also assume it was some other file or program that I had open, and and want to re-open it.

Something similar to the idea of "CTRL+Z"

Something like that. I have Macro Express Pro, is there any command I can do in that? Or any other method?

    Thanks.

    1. Try Listary free/commercial.

Eg. middle click on empty section of open/save dialogue offers a Recent list of files and folders.

    Does more than this too.

    Download Listary 5.00.2843

    2. Actual Window Manager (not free) and the various reduced derivatives offers extra buttons in the title bar for Recent and Favourites, On Top and much more.

Notepad, like many other apps, has a Jumplist of recent files. If you have Notepad pinned to the taskbar, just right-click on it then select the file you want from the 'Recent' list. If you don't have it pinned to the taskbar, find it on the Start menu (it's in Windows accessories) and right-click on it there. Works the same for most other apps.

dalchina: I tried that app, and I see many recently opened files, yet not the text file what was just open. And there are other programs that I had opened which don't show on there. Thanks though

Edwin: How do I get my Timeline look like yours. I searched on the computer for Timeline, and cannot find it: So I searched on the internet:
How to add a shortcut to open Timeline from desktop context menu on Windows 10 | Windows Central
And did that method. I opened the text file, then closed it. Right click Desktop > Timeline (look at the bottom of this reply to see what my time line shows: Those are all the currently opened programs. I see your picture, and that's EXACTLY what I want (assuming that those text files you had opened are currently closed and not open)!

Bree: Thanks for your suggestion as well, yet I don't really use that feature. I have Classic Shell/Explorer which I don't think has those features in there.

If you simply launch Notepad, rt click on the taskbar icon, you should see a jump list.

Nothing whatsoever to do with CS. I use CS start menu.

Do you have a taskbar? Please post a screenshot showing rt click on a Notepad icon on your taskbar.
(You'll need to use PrtSc or equivalent).

Listary- only updates recent items specifically opened via the Open dialogue.
Thus dragging something into Notepad, or rt click, Open With, doesn't add to its recent list.

It's the 'Pick up where you left off' part of Cortana... (WinKey+S)

FYI: Turn On or Off Recent Items and Frequent Places in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

In my start menu the above needs to be configured before it will work.

I tend to use Quick Cliq to keep track of recent files and folders anyway.

It's probably overkill to use this program only for keeping track of recent documents though.
