    Unexpected shutdown.

Where would I look in Event Viewer for unexpected shutdown causes? I would assume System but nothing sticks out except maybe this:

    Event 12, UserModePowerService

    Process C:\Windows\explorer.exe (process ID:9672) reset policy scheme from {381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e} to {b76f1d78-e966-4c8c-84ea-42835a06a87b}

Great thanks. I have two event 6008 but Event viewer doesn't give any clues as to the cause. Any tips to troubleshoot further?

The most likely cause of unexpected shutdowns is your hardware.

    Suggest you start with basics.

    Check your disk(s).
Try Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) - excellent, else HD Tune Health and Error scan tabs and post the (GUI) results. HD Tune also has a portable version. Both ok for SSDs.

If your system disk is ok, please run
    chkdsk c: /F
    from an admin command prompt.
Your PC will need to restart.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:

What disks are in your PC?

Run memory checks. Is all your RAM identical?

    Could be your PSU.

Check your temperatures eg. HWINFO - make sure it's not thermal shutdown (I think you'd hear your fans...).

You can run some stress tests:

I'm wondering if it's related to my D: HDD. Just got another Event 6008 unexpected shutdown as I was running a scan with HD Tune on D: I was away from the computer and did not see the sudden restart...

Edit: There were damaged sections on D: but the scan with HD Tune was interrupted with the sudden shutdown.

First, the Health tab assessment (SMART params) should be quick, so you should at least get that for D:
Second, Hard Disk Sentinel gives you a rapid clear indication.

If the scan is interrupted by a shutdown you may be able to do better using Kyhi's boot disk - available from the top of the Software and Apps section here- it includes HD Tune and many others. That way your Windows isn't running and disks not in use.

If it still shuts down, you've got a clear hardware problem.

You will want to make sure you have as much (useful data) backed up from D and any other partitions on that drive as you can.

Do you have programs installed on your HDD or just data?

You can simply remove your HDD and see if you still get shutdowns. If you have bad clusters on it and it's just data, I woudn't expect that to crash your system.

Couple of highlights on D: not sure what they are... Will install Hard Disk Sentinel and report back.

It's possible to get good SMART params and yet have some damaged sectors- that's built in to manufacture and design of HDDs which automatically reassign bad sectors. Clearly when the pool of spare ones is used, that's a problem.

That you see some may not be related at all to the shutdowns, but is worth watching in case of incipient failure.

Can Hard Disk Sentinel repair any issues with the drive?
