First post. New user Win10 - Old hand Windows generally. Some thoughts

    Hi All. Great forum.
I have only just come from XP. Stuck with it till the bitter end. In fact, still boot into XP because I haven't set up all the progs I use in the win10 install yet, while still working out how it flys.
My hesitance was that it seemed Win was going mac. Kinda dumbed down ui. Huge windows of wasted screen for simplistic settings, with a couple of basic buttons.
I've thrashed Run as a workaround to get under the bonnet faster and am getting there... sort of.
    The things I don't like -
I have searched for fixes, to find this os is just not as easily tweakable it seems, esp since creators update. Some great tutes and tips on this site have been amended to say this no longer works for win 10. And it doesn't like keeping your changes.
Hope you all will be able to help me through this difficult stage of my compu life. So thanks in advance.
    Cheers

Do not let Windows 10 connect to the Internet before disabling all the telemetry crap. Install Windows Firewall Control 5.3.1.0 and block all traffic except Firefox and the DNS service. Watch the connections log for any suspicious activity. There should be no outbound connections when the PC is idle.

Windows 7 / 8.1 would be a far better option if you have the drivers.

I don't disagree, the hardest part was trying to disentangle myself from my Microsoft ID and all that 'interactivity'.
Sync files I didn't want all over the place, and not being able to move my personal folders to a different drive.
In other words... wish I'd met you sooner.

and not being able to move my personal folders to a different drive.
You can do that, tutorials available. But beware- it's VERY easy to make a mistake. Some threads helping users to recover have taken a huge amount of effort.

Some, like me, have concluded that since installing programs frequently create folders in Documents, Videos etc, it's better to create new folders (add to libraries as you wish, or create new libraries - tutorials available) - then these contain ONLY and exclusively your files.

to find this os is just not as easily tweakable it seems,
Definitely not- part of MS's progressive move to make it uniformly available across a wide range of device types.

That said, you can make quite a few changes one way or another- examples in threads in e.g. the Customisation section. A replacement Start Menu (Classic Shell - being replaced by Open Shell, needed in builds post 1803 when Classic Shell no longer works) can make life easier.

** before you do any more installation or configuration, start using disk imaging routinely. People here often recommend Macrium Reflect (free) + large external storage for disk image sets.

Then you have both a full backup of imaged disks/partitions/Windows and can restore Windows even if your PC is unbootable or your disk fails, without technical help.

I would like to second Dalchina's opinion (most of it), but disagree about difficulty of moving User's folders.

Follow Brink's tutorials for Documents and repeat for other folders . Think it's the same as was in Windows 7...

The same about Classic shell. New developer take the from the last code and is also posting hehe. Now is Classic Start
tenforums classic-shell-no-longer-development-now-open-source See the first post in this thread for more info.

After a while you may find out, that Start menu in Windows 10 is not a bad option... and file and option syncing between computers and phones is actually a good idea, if you don't mind MS involvement in it.

Not the difficulty- the risk and the problems. You just have to look at some of the theads where users have got it wrong.

Ah that XP, I'm still running it on an ancient HP laptop and no AV either.
I'm dead against moving user folders, I just set everything up to install or save to secondary disks to save space on primary. Once I set up browsers and other programs to save (by default) to appropriate folders on other disks (4 permanent for now) they always do that so my C: \ drive doesn't contain any personal files. Regular, full system disk backup takes care of the rest.

Novice users mostly... I've never had any problems whatsoever.. First thing to do when building new system, or doing clean install (move everything personal to my data drive).

But not following Kari's way . Have a feeling, that buz have enough technical skills to do this without any risk.
