cannot save documents / can't fix or work with the new file access

Greetings. First computer was a Commodore 64. Win 10 always has me feeling like a neophyte....

I currently, as of today or yesterday, cannot save any documents in Open Office.
Also getting these warnings about file changes blocked---that's a new windows defender thing, right?

Also I have notices of updates waiting to be installed or downloaded, and no way that I understand to make this happen.

I have managed to add open office and folderlock to the allowed list on that access/changes business, but I still get the alerts and still cannot save a document.

    I have rebooted.

Have gone into Windows Defender, per a website or two, but do not see any area to make changes in ransomware protection in Settings (as shown on said websites.)

The alerts about blocking change/access don't seem to interfere with function; but pretty well non functional if I cannot save files.

Sorry, I'm sure I am repeating known issues, but I cannot get beyond this. Not feeling smart today!
    Thanks.

Sounds like Controlled Folder Access is turned on - Enable or Disable Controlled Folder Access in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

Have you checked Settings > Update & Security to see what updates are waiting to be downloaded and/or installed ?

Hi, welcome to tenforums. Please advise your current Windows build (Windows key + R, winver).

Do you have Home or Pro?

I currently, as of today or yesterday, cannot save any documents in Open Office.
Also getting these warnings about file changes blocked
Please post a screenshot (using the Insert Image icon above your post) showing this message. The exact text is needed to try to determine why you're getting that. Also post the file path (location) of the file being edited.

Does this problem happen when using any other program to edit files? E.g. Notepad? Wordpad?

folderlock to the allowed list on that access/changes business,
Please advise what folderlock is. Is it a 3rd party program? There is one of that name for encrypting files and folders.

Also I have notices of updates waiting to be installed or downloaded, and no way that I understand to make this happen.
Again, please post a screenshot of this message, so we know what sort of updates these might be and might be able to identify the message. There are various sorts of update from Windows updates to program updates and app updates.....

Doubtful that it is Windows Defender. Something else caused a lock. What directory are you trying to save the files to?

    Hmpf.
Have just managed to turn off the folder access effect, and all is (nominally well.)
Have to tell you, I was looking or that option off a tutorial that showed "Ransomware Protection" as a category---one I cannot locate in my Windows Defender center.
But I just found a place to switch off or on the folder access, switched it off, and OK.

Wouldn't be the first- time I have not seen on my computer screen something described on a tutorial.

Now, then, a screenshot of my download question. (This may be moot because I thought the first problem might have been from incomplete updates.) First, I can no longer save a screenshot from Paint. The save window opens, but grays out. Hell with it!
Here is screenshot by different method:

cannot save documents / can't fix or work with the new file access-screenshot-2-.png

Well, maybe it is....not showing as i am composing this.

So now that I have disabled this valuable new feature that protects my files from ransomware, is this a good place to leave things?

    - bear in mind that MS keeps changing things every 6 months, so that's one possibility for a discrepancy. (Look at the huge list of tutorials- a big challenge). User feedback following a tutorial gets a quick response...

It looks like you're using build 1709, with a feature update to 1803 pending. (A bit puzzling it also shows one for 1709).

Have a look at your Update History- does it show repeated failures to upgrade to 1803?
Have you had updates disabled at all?

If you do manage to upgrade successfully, that may solve your problems saving files.

    Hey denno,
If you haven't disabled updates and don't have any failed updates ... could it be your using a metered connection? If you are you can allow updates over a metered connection or you can turn off metered connection for your wired or wireless adapter, depending on which you use.

Allow updates over metered connection (option 1) - Allow Automatic Updates over Metered Connections in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

Turn off metered connection wired (option 1) - Set Ethernet Connection as Metered or Unmetered in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

Turn off metered connection wireless (option 1) - Set Wireless Network as Metered or Non-Metered in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

Note: IIRC that 1709 KB4023057 is a prerequisite for upgrading to 1803.

Leave it alone. This is not a defender issue. Again, what folder are you trying to save your files in?

Dang it, when I marked it solved, it seems to have ditched my final post.

Solved, inasmuch as I can save files again, incl. from Paint.
The downloads noted in Defenders, Settings, seem to be assuring me they will install in good time. (???)
I don't think I have a metered connection, but we've had lousy, dying DSL for the past 13 years on this here mountain (and glad to get it). They are running optic to us next week!!!

The question remains, what about this super new Folder Access feature? I now have it disarmed. Don't I want the protection? What's a body to think about this?

THANK YOU ALL for help, input, and for giving a damn.
