Show thumbnail previews for shortcuts of a video files?

Is there a way for video previews to appear on the thumbnails of shortcuts of video files? The same they do as if you are looking at the thumbnail of the video itself?

Try installing video players like Splayer.

    Hi,

Do you mean how they are presented in File Explorer or are you after something that will show the contents of the file shortcut like on your desktop? I believe, but not sure that if thumbnails are enabled it will carry over to your desktop.

May be you just need to turn thumbnails on? Enable or Disable Thumbnail Previews in File Explorer in Windows 10

You may also want to check your default programs and make sure their set properly. It doesn't sound like you need to reset all of your default programs but this will show you what your video files should be set to and if not Brink has a .bat file to do it for you there on the left column: Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10

Installing this codec pack did it for me.

    Download K-Lite Codec Pack Basic

This is what I was looking for but unfortunately after installing this I still do not see the proper icons on my .lnks.

Hi, I edited my original post to be more clear. Unfortunately I have checked that thumbnail previews are on and have tried restoring the default associations with no luck.

Okay, until Tairiku can get back...

I looked in the faqs section and a couple of items stood out, klite should work okay as an overlay, did you see anything about removing any other's?
At the beginning of the installation I am asked if I want to uninstall a program X. Is that required?

And maybe you don't need all components?
Is it possible to uninstall only a couple components of the K-Lite Codec Pack and keep the rest?

Or, there may be an option you need to enable?

@TairikuOkami should be more helpful when s/he returns.

For me I don't see icons if I reduce icon size [right click blank area] then CTRL + or CTRL -

Increasing size helps them to display. Then check folder view settings to display large icons.

    Also try this:

I've made some progress, but I think this as good as it might get for me. Someone on another forum told me to check if these two .lnk related reg keys existed, which they didn't. I've added them and now when I visit a folder with shortcuts, some with auto-populate the thumbnail with a preview, while others won't generate the preview until I double click and actually run the video from the shortcut. At this point, I'm not going to complain.

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lnk\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
    @="{00021401-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lnk\ShellEx\{E357FCCD-A995-4576-B01F-234630154E96}]
    @="{00021401-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}"
