    Power and battery

I just had a black screen; all I could see was the mouse arrow. I researched on my other laptop and discovered it's a common problem with Win10. I tried a few recommended things but nothing happened: black screen and mouse.

For some reason I got it into my head to remove the battery and leave the laptop just plugged into the wall. It started normally and some 6 programs I tried so far have worked perfectly. So now I am wondering whether I should have both battery and wall-power at the same time. Should I perhaps remove the battery permanently and just run the machine on power?

Thanks for all advice, opinions, gossip.

I just called a friend and he suggested I run the machine on battery only until the battery is down to, say, 20%, then plug it in again to power until the battery is back to 100%; then unplug it and run on battery only. Ad infinitum. Any opinions on this process? Thanks again.

    Tony,

One tip in Windows 7 that also works in Windows 10 is, if this problem should ever happen again which it might not,
    - Using any bootable USB/DVD that you possess, boot from it then reboot normally.
    - [Do not do anything when you have booted from the USB/DVD, just get out of it without taking any action]

I had to do this only a couple of weeks ago [Windows 10 x64 Ver 1709] after I had absentmindedly removed the battery while the computer was sleeping.

If the problem persists or if it occurs frequently then you will need to investigate the problem properly.

    Tony,

Understood. I just thought that my suggestion needed an explanation of the circumstances in which I had used it myself.

I used to see the suggestion made in some Windows 7 forums for booted to black screen with cursor but never saw any explanation of why it might work. I suspect that it either relates to Windows not having been correctly completed a prior Shutdown or to memory faults.

If the problem happens again & the suggestion does no good then you could use zbook's advice [above] or consider
