Could my laptop be damaged because of running very hot in sleep mode

Hey there,

I didn't know turning your laptop to sleep mode and then storing it away in your bag would be a big no no no. Lesson learned. It was only a few hours it stayed in there but the damage I wonder what could that be like?

Its a new laptop with very good specs. MSI laptop of over 2k eur cost.

How are you entering sleep mode? In sleep mode your HDD and GPU are powered off. Only part of the memory controller and some assorted motherboard logic have power. So there should be very little heat being generated.

I just collapse the screen till its closed and touching the keyboard. I'm now doing hibernate instead and testing if it goes hot again in the bag.

I would check my power setting for closing the cover. I keep mine set to do nothing that may be a default setting.
Control Panel/ Power Options/ select your power profile and click Advanced, check all your setting there you'll find Lid closing and power button USB lots of other settings. I 'm guessing your cover is set to do nothing instead of go to sleep. Check for both on power and on battery.

Personally, I would never put a notebook in a case without it fully shut down. With the startup speeds, we have today its foolish to take a chance of something happening in that case with power still going to the notebook.

I think something woke your computer from sleep while it was in your bag.
I think you caught it before any damage was done judging by the temperatures you reported. I once looked up my CPU specs at www.cpu-world.com to find the max temperature, which was for mine 105 degrees C.

Have a look in Event viewer to see if it was woken up during that period -
Log - System
Source - Power-Troubleshooter
EventID - 1

Have a look in Task scheduler to see what events ran during the relevant period.
- This is easiest if you look within an hour so you can look through fewer task records on the opening TS window - in the section Task status, select Last hour.
- You can look through longer periods such as the last 24 hours but there will be so many entries shown that it is difficult.
- You can also look in Event viewer records of TS tasks and you might find this easier to get to grips with if it has been a while since the bag incident because they are all listed in sequence -
