Is my Hard Disk Drive dying? Disk bad block errors and warnings!

    I built a computer 9 years ago with an AMD FX-8370, GTX 960, 16GB RAM and a WDC WD2003FYPS-27W9B0 2TB hard drive.

After 9 years of having this computer. Suddenly today for the first time ever I am experiencing Event Viewer Errors never witnessed before!

The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block. Event ID 7
The file system structure on volume C: has now been repaired. Event ID 130
Too many repair events have occurred in a short period of time. Event ID 132
Temporarily suspending posting of further repair events.

In the StorDiag folder of Event Viewer this shows up Completing a failed Read SCSI SRB request Event ID 500 and 505

Apart from that in Disk Defragmenter my Disk Drive C has also vanished. Only the partition is being displayed as shown in my screenshot. Is my Hard Disk Drive dying? Disk bad block errors and warnings!-hard-drive-vanished-disk-deframentor.jpg
    C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 55% complete.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

    C:\Windows\system32>

Volume C: (\Device\HarddiskVolume2) requires an Online Scan. An Online Scan will automatically run as part of the next scheduled maintenance task. Alternatively you may run "CHKDSK /SCAN" locally via the command line, or run "REPAIR-VOLUME <drive:> -SCAN" locally or remotely via PowerShell.

All of this out of the blue! I've used Windows 10 fresh although it is old 1903 since December 2021. Never did these errors come before. Restarting doesn't solve this.

Does this indicate I'll have to replace my Hard Drive and buy a new one? All errors seem to point at WDC WD2003FYPS-27W9B0.

Get CrystalDiskInfo and run it... in two seconds it will tell you if the drive is dead or dying...

Download - Crystal Dew World [en]

Get the ZIP version... that's the portable (no install version).

The above program has been recommended hundreds of times on tenforums,

Better: get Hard Disk Sentinel (full functional trial) - analysis in comprehensible English.

Note that you can detect early disk failures:
    - use either of these programs set to report failure (see their help etc for how to do that).
    - use disk imaging regularly and routinely. The very act of creating a disk image with Macrium Reflect means the surface is scanned for CRC errors and discrepancies reported. This helped me to identify incipient failure in one case.

Plus your previous disk image means you have a full backup to help you not lose data.

    Many thanks for your suggestion!

I just tried downloading the extracted file. The file version that is zipped cannot even be extracted! Something is definitely not right with my Hard Drive. As double clicking on it does nothing.

I then downloaded the installer file and upon launching, this is what it shows. Caution.

Is my Hard Disk Drive dying? Disk bad block errors and warnings!-caution.jpg
Doesn't show anything for Remaining Life. I have never ran something like this before so I cannot say if this Caution will have always been there or not. But I believe this wouldn't have shown because until today I have never had any warnings or errors concerning my Hard Drive in the last 9 years.

SFC /Scannow was always showing as "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations."

But not anymore. Now it will fail this after 55%. I have done nothing to my computer in recent days. The only thing I did was upgrade to a new Razer Huntsman V2 keyboard but that was in April the 3rd.

My GPU and CPU temps appear as normal. 26 Degrees Celsius minimum 33 max for GPU. CPU minimum 32.5 Degrees Celsius max 40.

If you want a meaningful report that puts it in English and predicts remaining life etc, try Hard Disk Sentinel. .. portable version available.

It is periodically given away e.g.

    (expired).

Wouldn't it be better to upgrade to a Solid State Drive? I have never had an SSD and I was even thinking in the past to upgrade to one. Now I'm thinking this might be a chance given that my Hard Drive is showing bad signs!

    My motherboard is an AsRock 970M Pro 3 ASRock > 970M Pro3

Do you know what kind of SSDs will be compatible for this motherboard?

I've backed up all my important documents and files to cloud storage and OneDrive including save game data, videos and music.
I found something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/KingSpec-1T...dp/B0BKPWQVHV/

Would this work? It will also give me faster boot times in Windows and in games. I also have Fibre to the Premises available in my area up to 3Gbps symmetrical with Community Fibre London. I believe I'll need SSD if I want to upgrade to gigabit broadband speeds as I heard conventional hard drives could bottleneck speeds.

I'm seeing 2.5 Inch SATA SSD and SSD PCle 3.0x4, NVMe M.2. But I don't think the NVMe M.2 will be compatible right?

I'll simply have to freshly reinstall Windows 10 again, which of-course will be a hassle but this is something that is going to be unavoidable now anyway. May as well take advantage and finally try SSD for the first time in my life!

Your motherboard doesn't have the capability for NVMe SSDs, but you can use 2.5" SSDs.
They just plug into the SATA connectors on your motherboard... like hard drives do.

We could give better recommendations if you posted a screen shot of Disk Management...

How to Post a Screenshot of Disk Management

But... a drive lasting 9 years is a good run for any kind of drive.

For example... I run a small, 2.5" SSD for my Windows drive, and two large WD Blacks for my storage drives.
I try to keep the "used space" on the Windows drive, below 50GB.
That way... backups and restores, of my Windows drive... take under two minutes.
Any large games or large programs... I install on one of my storage drives.

I don't know what kind of budget you're working with, but you should probably just build a whole new computer... something like this, maybe. This will be compatible with Windows 11 also.

    Mid-range computer...

Part List - AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, GeForce RTX 4070, Fractal Design Meshify C ATX Mid Tower - PCPartPicker

The power supply you have may be adequate. I can't tell what brand it is, so I'm not sure.

    CDRLabs.com - Crucial MX500 1TB Solid State Drive - Reviews - all-pages

HD Tach RW 3.0.4.0: [...] The screenshot also shows that, like most other TLC-based SSDs, the MX500 uses some sort of SLC caching. The drive starts writing at about 400 MB/s and then drops to about 290 MB/s when the write operation exceeds the size of the cache.

The sustainable write speed of this drive (290 MB/s) is very good, but don't expect all to be similar. The one of my two 250GB SSDs is about 200 MB/s which is quite decent, but some go below 100 MB/s. The pic also shows the size of the SLC section that is about 30 GB in this case, what in gross terms means that smaller than 30GB writes will be done at 400 MB/s (I recall 7GB instead in a lower model). The drive is also equipped with a pair of 512MB Micron DDR3L memory chips that are used for caching. Some lower drives simply lack this.

This is a high quality SSD. Others of this segment will feature similar "hidden specs", say 25GB SLC, 320 MB/s sustainable writes, 1 GB RAM too. In lower segments they will be lower or absent, but unfortunately it's not easy to get these detailed specs.
