    CD/DVD drive won't write/burn CD's

    I have a Dell XPS 8920 i7-7700 with Windows 10, 22h2, build 19045.4291

I can no longer burn or write to CD's or DVD's through Windows; I get a message of incorrect parameters. When I first reinstalled Win 10 from ISO, I had this capability. The drive must be OK, because I can write/burn to CD and DVD using Roxio "Easy CD&DVD burning 2"

Dell wants $100 to "troubleshoot" the problem; I tried that once, and after a month and at least f tech calls and remote accesses, I gave up on Dell and re-installed Win 10 from ISO. I'm not about to do THAT again.

    Any suggestions/solutions?

You could try a Windows repair install. It will keep you apps and data and just repair Windows system files and permissions:
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

If you're considering third party burning software, other than the aforementioned Roxio, this one is good and free:

Which program in Windows is having issues with the burner, and what is the extension of what you are trying to write to the discs?

To support computers without an ODD and to test those with an ODD but having issues I use an LG External USB 2 ODD that cost a whopping $26US at Wal*Mart back in February, no drivers needed beyond what Windows/Windows Updates provides.

I'll try the "Repair." I already have the Roxio software, and it works, so it's not a problem with the drive; WIn 10 Explorer says I have files to burn to the CD (or DVD) but when I try; all I get is "incorrect parameters;" I get the same response if I try to copy a CD.

I know the drive (CD/DVD R/W) is good because I cn burn files or copy a music CD iif I use the Roxio software, which I already have installed.

In Powershell [admin ] type in ---dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth ---then press Enter.
When the process has finished, type in ---sfc /scannow ---press Enter and run sfc until a clean report is given.
This will cleanup any corrupt files which appear to be preventing Windows from using the cd drive.
If it does not fix it,then uninstall the Roxio software, repeat the dism/sfc proceedure and then reinstall the Roxio soft ware.

Note: you should consider creating a new user account just for test purposes - then delete it. Log in to that account- if you see the SAME problem an in-place upgrade repair install could well help. If not, the problem is specific to your account, and you could well waste your time with an in-place upgrade repair install.

I can no longer burn or write to CD's or DVD's through Windows; I get a message of incorrect parameters.
If this recurs, please explain- with screenshots- exactly what you are doing, and the exact error message with its text (typed).

There are plenty of references on the net about that kind of error.

It sounds like the issue might be related to a software conflict or driver issue rather than a problem with the drive itself. Since you're able to burn CDs and DVDs using Roxio software, it's likely that the drive is functioning properly.

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

Update or reinstall the drivers for your CD/DVD drive:
Open Device Manager by pressing Windows key + X and selecting Device Manager.
    Expand the DVD/CD-ROM drives section.
Right-click on your CD/DVD drive and select Update driver. Follow the on-screen instructions to update the driver.
If updating the driver doesn't work, you can try uninstalling the driver and then restarting your computer to let Windows reinstall it automatically.

    Check for Windows updates:
Make sure your Windows 10 is up to date by checking for updates in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.

Try using a different burning software:
If updating or reinstalling the drivers doesn't resolve the issue, you can try using a different burning software to see if it works without any errors. There are many free options available online, such as ImgBurn or CDBurnerXP.

    Check for software conflicts:
It's possible that another software installed on your computer is conflicting with the built-in Windows burning feature. Try disabling or uninstalling any recently installed software to see if it resolves the issue.

Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter:
Open Control Panel and go to Troubleshooting.
Under Hardware and Sound, click on Configure a device and follow the prompts to run the troubleshooter.

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, you may need to consider seeking assistance from a professional technician or contacting Dell support again.

I'm quite sure the (internal) DVD R/W drive is good; it CAN write to CDs or DVD's with ROXIO EZ Burning 2," it just won't write with native Windows 10 (now; it did when I first re-installed Win 10 from an ISO.)
I've already re-rew uninstalled and rebooted, to let Win 1`0 reinstall the drivers, so that doesn't seem to be the problem. I only installed the ROXIO software, because Win 10 could not write to disks; it READS both CD's and DVD's with no problem. Windows 10 is kept up to date on a regular basis.

It seems the problem is with either a Windows update, or something in Dell's "Support Assistant" (Which I suspect, considering other experience with Dell tech service.) I'll try the "Repair" method suggested, but will have to wait until after the weekend.

    Thanks to all so far.
