    Issue booting computer.

Last week my mom experienced extreme slowness on her computer. It has 10 pro with the build unknown. Task manger showed a high cpu cycle history for the phone app which I disabled and reset. Also trend micro was unresponsive. I also did a clean with the native drive cleanup freeing ~1.5 gb. I started an SFC and left. It ran for over 12 hours and didn't complete but she stated that the computer was performing better. Starting yesterday she had slowness again, then the bsod critical_process_died. After that the computer loaded almost to the login screen but she didn't have the login option. She had the mouse cursor so windows was running. Since then Windows goes into an auto repair followed by a black screen. I've tried and can't get safe mode.

Using an install disk on usb created by the media creation tool I was only able to get a blue screen and the big menu box with the install or repair option closed so quickly I couldn't even read any messages on it. The same thing happens with 2 dvds. Also I can't boot Linux mint with the drive in. The drive does show up in the bios. However I can boot the install disks and linux mint with no drive or a different blank drive so I'm thinking that the drive is dying. I'm going to install 10 on the second drive and go from there but does anyone else concur? It's a custom computer and I don't at this time know the specs.

If you can boot to a cmd prompt then run a full disk check or there will be tests for the specific disk from the makers site

I can't. The OS doesn't boot and the Windows installer disk doesn't boot if that drive is connected.

Often the most efficient methods to return to a working computer is to first test the drive.

If the drive fails then manually backup files > replace the drive > clean install Windows > install drivers > install applications > restore backed up files

If the drive passes then perform a custom install.

A custom install is designed to install a fresh operating system and save files to Windows.old.

Drivers and applications must be reinstalled.

Important files are restored from Windows.old

    1) Find one or two flash drives that you can format (> or = 8 GB)

    2) Find a working Windows computer

    3) On the working Windows computer create tools that can be used on the problematic computer

    4) Create a bootable Sea Tools flash drive

    SeaTools Bootable | Seagate US

    https://www.seagate.com/content/dam/...lsBootable.zip

    5) Create a bootable Windows 10 Media Creation Tool (MCT) (Windows 10 iso)

    Download Windows 10 ISO File

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

    6) Boot the problematic computer to the Sea Tools flash drive

List of PC brands with their corresponding hot-keys

    7) Run the Sea Tools Long Generic test > take pictures > post images or share links

    8) If the Long Generic test displays fail then manually back up files using one or more of the following

    a) boot using the Windows 10 MCT (Windows 10 iso) > Windows Recovery Environment (RE) > command prompt > notepad

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...8-635e8ba9efd6

    b) move the drive to an empty bay of another computer > copy and paste

    c) purchase a HD enclosure > move the problematic drive into the HD enclosure > connect to a working windows computer > copy and paste

hd enclosure amazon - Google Search

    9) If the Long Generic test displays pass then perform a custom install

    Custom Install Windows 10

    10) Install drivers displayed on the computer or motherboard manufacturer websites

    11) Install applications

    12) Restore important files from Windows.old

Everything points to a failing drive.
Is it a SSD or HDD?

HDD. I got a free SSD and did a clean install to it. A chkdsk failed and the drive shows as not formatted. I've tried 2 recovery programs including easus and neither see the drive. I can't boot if the drive is plugged in as an internal drive even to the other disk but I can use an adapter to plug it into a usb port but that also has resulted in freezing if I try to access the drive.
