Metadata staging failed errors at startup and in Devices and Printers!

    Hello,

In a recent couple of days I started getting these errors.

Everything was fine until I simply went to the Control Panel Devices and Printers and since doing that immediately this started triggering the Metadata staging failed errors at startup!
Metadata staging failed errors at startup and in Devices and Printers!-metadata-staging-failed.jpg

If I go to Device installation settings and click "No" this stops these errors.

Never before did I have this problem! I did a Windows System Restore to last months date before experiencing this. Unfortunately, the old problem still carried over so system restore did not solve the problem.

Is this a global problem? I note that I did a search of this yesterday and this month of December other people on the Microsoft Support Forums are reporting the same problem.

I don't understand why it is doing that. Do you all get the same experience when going to Devices and Printers ?

    Many thanks.

Quite a few from 21st to 26th Dec - .. is some driver update being attempted?

    Clues here:
Metadata staging failed - Event ID 131 errors in EventLog | Windows 11 Forum

Nor is it a new phenomenon (2019):
Event ID 131 Metadata errors happening lately.

Which was your last update? (your build number is missing..)
From the above may be update-related..

No device driver is attempting to install. All drivers are up to date. There is no Device Install Service at startup, only Device Setup Manager.

There's a link here that I found from only 2 days ago. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...731d554?page=2

How it got triggered? Well I had problems with analogue slight stick drifting with my PDP Rematch Xbox Series X controller after 9 months. A very mild drifting where my analogue wouldn't return back to 0.0 but remain sometimes at 0.1 in the gamepad tester website.

So I decided to go to Devices and Printers with the intent to reset calibration to default as that was advice given on the web.

This unfortunately, started triggering these meta staging errors now. Now on every PC reboot Windows is trying to do a meta staging refresh. If I also go to Devices and Printers the clock icons next to the devices will wait for a long time before being flooded with errors in Event Viewer.

My build version is 1903 final. I know this isn't just an issue with the version as people with latest windows versions are reporting the same issue. I managed to install latest Windows 10 Malicious Software update without issues.

I get "A connection to the Windows Metadata and Internet Services (WMIS) could not be established."

Certainly, this is not a new phenomenon. It seems to be server side related from Microsoft. I'm sure if once it is successfully staged then these errors will stop.

If you go to Devices and Printers it will most probably trigger errors for you as well.

I've found quite a few event id 131's now from 21st-26th Dec e.g.
Metadata staging failed, result=0x80070490 for container '{4CA76FD6-522C-11ED-8B45-28D244EC7015}'

Seems quite a common report and nothing you can fix. As you suggest, more likely server-side related.

    E.g.
    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/an...0070490-0x8007

There is some interesting detail and maybe a fix (?) from here:
    Metadata staging failed
    eventually to here:
Continues Errors at startup "Metadata staging failed" | Page 2 | Windows 8 Help Forums

However that link address is in a post from 2014, so treat as indicative rather than applicable now.

Please see comments following this News item:

    KB5033372 Windows 10 Cumulative Update Build 19044.3803 and 19045.3803

This problem seems to be caused at MS's end, and has occurred at quite wide intervals over the years.

I see, it indeed is related to MS end! Further post found here Event ID 131, Metadata staging failed in Windows 11/10

Going here to check shows Devicemetadataservice.trafficmanager.net - Is Devicemetadataservice Down Right Now?
    Website Name:
    devicemetadataservice.traffi…URL Checked:
    no responseResponse Time:
    more than a weekDown For:
    DOWN
    Devicemetadataservice.trafficmanager.net is DOWN
It is not just you. The server is not responding...

    https://www.isitdownrightnow.com/dmd...osoft.com.html

    Dmd.metaservices.microsoft.com is DOWN
It is not just you. The server is not responding...

So basically the link that is http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?Link...69&clcid=0x409 redirects to one of these 2 links above. But both of them are down.

I guess the people from Microsoft who are in charge of fixing this is are on holiday (December) Christmas break (I suspect). It is not related to any patch as some may think it is. It may be a coincidence that those who patched it had the server briefly on before it going down again. But going to any of these links will result in 502 error.

This is actually quite unacceptable for Microsoft to leave such an issue like this unresolved for the entire month of December and taking no responsibility whatsoever to fix it. People who freshly installed Windows will think something is wrong with their installation when it just happens to be server down.

Now if we want to buy a new device or reinstall Windows at this point we can't install latest drivers as the servers are down...

Well.. if the problem is triggered by that update being installed... I would think one way to complete a clean install without potential issues is not to incorporate that update.. if indeed the result would be to prevent essential drivers being downloaded.

Not sure a clean install would necessarily be prevented though..

As the pattern of this occurring seems, to be have been repeated periodically, you might think MS would be more careful... hmm.

I have this issue and the periodic device refresh seems to have made my USB keyboard unrecognizable. Using on screen keyboard. Get Help support doesn't understand and keeps trying to use Device Manager, but without the metadata URL working, the device wont ever fully initialize.

Can everybody experiencing this use Get Help app to report this? January and still no fix from Microsoft. Why???

I have the same problem, the event log is full of these entries.
The servers have now been offline for months.

Set the option under "Device installation settings" to "No" "solves" the problem, the icons are are not downloadable anyway, but what else does the option control?
What exactly is meant by "Manufacturers apps"? Driver Software Components?

Other than that, it's just sad.

    Yeah... sure!

I noticed this problem last week no thanks to Microsoft's shoddy software QA. The above fix works.
