SPECULATION: Will future Windows replace drive letters?
I have a whole bunch of partitions for different projects, spread across 3 NVMe drives and 4 regular SSD drives of various sizes, and 3 relatively large HDD drives. In total I use 20, yes 20, different Windows drive letters, starting with C: . I'm trying to keep drive partition organization simple, both for backup/restore reasons and because I'm now starting to use Windows Subsystem for Linux.
So here is my speculative question: Will a future windows replace the 24 available drive letters with a folder structure, something like Linux? What would be involved technically? Has Microsoft ever given any indications that they might make this change in a future version of Windows.
For people who manage Windows servers, is drive letter availability an issue now? How do admins work around this issue?
