Just got a new Seagate Portable Drive (nominal 2TB)

    Making backups as I write.

The drive is potable and plugs into a USB port.

Question: Is it possible to make that drive bootable? If so, is it advisable?

    Thank you.

    Whoops.

I already have system images with 3rd party software (including to the cloud), but I thought I'd give this a try.

I can just live with this if I have to, but is there some not too elaborate way to fix this?
Maybe something I should enable at start up?

    2TB is a helluva lot.

    Thanks.

In this day and age 2tb is not a lot. Linux you can boot off it but it will be slower than a internal on SATA.

Aw heck. I just noticed I said the drive was "potable".

The way I use my machine 2TB is plenty.
No million customer databases or movie libraries.

The answer is yes, you can make it bootable. Yes, you can even run Windows from it but it would be very slow.

Fixed the system backup problem. I needed to start the Workstation service.

Ensure you don't move the drive when it is running since it's quite easy to break the drive.

    Right.

As it is, it is save on the table behind the monitor, and though technically portable I will be leaving it plugged in.

A backup drive should be rested unplug to avoid being contaminated by malware.
