    BIOS (1.36) Broke My USB Support In The BIOS & Shutdown Function

    Dell Inspiron 15 - (5578) / Windows 10 Home 64Bit

    Updated the BIOS from 1.27 to 1.36 (17 Jan. 2022)
    USB dongle is recognized in all ports, in File Explorer.

    1. I cannot shut down the laptop from the menu. When I do, it automatically restarts right after showing "Shutting Down".

    (a) CHOOSE OR CUSTOMIZE A POWER PLAN
    I set the power button to shut down the laptop in "Dell" and "Balanced".

    (b) Network Adapters
    - Disabled it (which worked for some people, but not me).

    (c) I tried #6 here, his, still not shutting down.
    Change Default Action of Shut Down Windows Dialog in Windows 10

    (d) Pressing and holding the power button works with Windows still open, which is NOT proper for shutting down the system.

    2. BIOS not recognizing USB drive, after the BIOS upgrade to 1.36. Now, am stock since I cannot downgrade to the 1.27 I had. I need to boot a utility from a USB dongle, but I can't.

    Cheeeers!

    @caxtin -

    You should be able to downgrade the BIOS, go to the Dell Support Site for your Service Tag.

    Have to run but look at this -

    Good people here, too - create an account.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks for your quick reply. The BIOS at the download page at Dell says "you cannot downgrade the BIOS to version 1.4.0 or earlier" which is kind strange. I'll go through the link you sent on the BIOS recovery. Am just kinda scared not to mess this laptop up, since it's not mine. Just helping a friend out.

    Also, I already posted to the Dell Community the "Good people".

    Cheers.

    @caxtin -

    I'm back.

    Can you shut the laptop down, remove all peripherals and detach AC Adapter for 30 seconds, then plug in the AC Adapter again and reboot?
    Do not attach any external peripherals.

    Curious. What prompted you to update the BIOS?

    BIOS (1.36) Broke My USB Support In The BIOS & Shutdown Function-boot3.jpg

    UPDATE
    I recreated the Windows 10 USB boot drive, and selected the UEFI in the BIOS, then I was able to boot from the attached USB. I will live with this. Thanks all for your suggestions.

    Now the second issue on this thread, I attributed to the BIOS upgrade, I need to be able to shut down the laptop with the power button.

    Do not attach any external peripherals.

    I believe that is done since the laptop sits with unplugged and no peripheral is attached to it, except the wireless mouse USB adapter, which I removed for initial tests.

    The laptop is a friend's who owns three others and managing to buy another one, simply because she feels non of them is fast enough. She can't afford to buy a new one now. I suggested checking all his four laptops, and this one is the best. It is an i3 Intel, 8GB RAM, HDD. I suggested me checking it out and decided to get her a SSD instead, and update all drivers; no update has ever been done since she had it, including Windows. The BIOS was one of the drivers, so, I decided to update that also. Being from the DELL site, I felt it would be okay to do so. True because it was from the manufacturer's site does not make it wrong to do so. I know BIOS is s very finicky thingy, why not update/upgrade everything.? For many years past, I have updated lots of BIOS in all my computers, and this is one that got me. I think I have a valid enough reason(s) to have updated the BIOS.

    Cheers.

    BIOS (1.36) Broke My USB Support In The BIOS & Shutdown Function-bootsequence.jpg

    Googling and found some answers. Now, I can boot from the USB drive with the upgraded BIOS (1.36).\
    With the UEFI, I could boot from my USB. Then, I set it back to Legacy to go back to Windows 10.

    Shutdown Function

    Since I would not mind having a new installation of Windows, I did so. After which, the Shut Down function now works. Yippie!!!
