Recommend PCIe M2 SSD for Dell Laptop

I'm upgrading a friend's Dell Inspiron 5770 laptop which has a small 128GB SSD. What PCIe M2 SSD do people recommend these days size 500GB - 1TB? He is only doing routine office work and web browsing. The Crucial memory selector finds these:

Your friend will see a difference in speed going from a SATA SSD to PCIe SSD regardless of brand or specs.
IMHO, since performance is not the driving force here then I would just do best bang for the buck.
Divide the price by the GB and get the lowest cost per.

He has a SATA SSD via the M2 interface. I bought a Crucial P5 Plus 500GB PCIe M.2 2280SS Gaming SSD based on price / performance for £59 Crucial P5 Plus 500GB PCIe M.2 2280SS Gaming SSD | CT500P5PSSD8 | Crucial.com

I didn't find many configuration tools to confirm compatibility - only Crucial and Kingston.

That is a big ask.
While I've heard of motherboards that have M.2 sockets that will do both NVMe and SATA, I have never seen one in the wild.

If the socket is on the SATA bus then the NVMe will not work. Nothing bad would happen, it just wouldn't work.
If the socket is on the PCIe bus then both could work, if the capability is baked in. The SATA module would run at SATA speed on the PCIe bus (in theory - still haven't seen this animal).

I'd be interested in hearing how it goes!

Well it shows as compatible on the Crucial configurator and Dell specification:

I have a dell laptop with an m.2 port compatible with sata and pci express 3.0 x4, I changed the m.2 sata to an m.2 nvme as soon as I got it.

I can only see a BIOS entry to enable / disable ports SATA 0, SATA 1, SATA 2, SATA 3 and M.2 PCIe SSD-0. All are currently enabled. I'm assuming I just swap out the old SSD, insert the new one and it should just be found on reboot.
