Technical Info for Dell 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD in G5 laptop?

    Technical Info for Dell 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD in G5 laptop?


    I am thinking of buying a Dell G5 'gaming' laptop with a 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD.
    I've decided on a G5 due to it's better cooling.
    I will be upgrading from a Windows 8.1 Dell Inspiron.
    This will be my first laptop that does not have standard SATA Hard Drive.
    Does anyone know how reliable the Dell SSDs are and what the total number of P/E cycles they have?
    I was thinking of getting a laptop with a 256GB SSD and 1TB SATA Hard Drive but I don't need 1TB of storage.
    512GB SSD would be enough for everything.
    I'm worried about reliability. I've never had (touch wood) any hard drive fail before.

    Don´t worry about these numbers, they are meaningless. Any SSD can fail at any time. Just assume that this will happen sooner or later, and plan accordingly. For example, create regularly backup images of your system, and file backups of your data.

    I so some support on the Dell forums. I don't recall seeing any complaints about the M.2 SSD's.
    I have a 3 year old Dell Inspiron 15, 5577 gaming laptop. I don't game with it but use it in my recording studio. It came with an M.2 2280 256GB SSD and working OK.

    I use SSD's on my recording studio desktop and at the 5 year mark the SSD's are still showing full life.

    Interesting information.
    Using a SSD for your recording studio: I guess your SSD has been written to and information deleted a great number of times over those 5 years, so that's put my mind at rest.
    I use 'Crystaldiskinfo' for my SATA hard drive. Will it work (or is there something similar) for a SSD?

    Crystal Disk Info works fine for my SSDs; I have a Crucial SATA 2.5 inch and an Intel M2 NVMe.

    I'm wondering if your "Dell" SSD is actually a branded "Dell" or if it is a major manufacturer's product--such as WD, Samsung, Crucial, whoever. Maybe a "private labeled" item made by a major manufacturer. I haven't owned a Dell PC in close to 20 years, so I don't know how that works these days.

    It might come with some special Dell software to monitor it--maybe a "toolbox" download.

    That's what I've been wondering, if Dell's SSD is actually from one of the big names?
    Nice to know 'Crystal Disk info' will work with SSDs.

    To know what brands are the SSDs that Dell uses in a specific computer, look in the webpage that lists the drivers and downloads updates available for that computer. For the G5, it appears they´re using Toshiba SSDs.

    Hmm...

    I would kike to think that Dell wouldn't put them into systems that would fail rapidly, more so with the more expensive business systems.
    Nevertheless, it is worth investing in a top-notch protection plan from the company - especially North American based support.

    Dell uses many different vendors for the SSD's. Info isn't published as to what is used in what PC and a different vendor's SSD may be used in the same model, depending on the production run.

    I just looked at the downloads for one G5 (5590) and there are firmware updates for 5 different vendor's SSD's.

    Thanks for the replies.
    Yes, I always take out a 'Protection Plan' with Dell. With my current Dell laptop which I've had for just over 7 years, the only thing that's gone wrong was the 'motherboard' a couple of times, which was replaced due to the plan I had.
    It does freeze on occasions now and there's problems with folders not remembering their last size, which I've tried fixing. Doesn't look like they can be fixed as there is corruption in Windows.
    I've decided it's time for a new, more powerful laptop.
