    Can't install an M.2 SSD

    Dear friends,

I bought an Acer laptop (model A315-51_Z) with Windows 10 on it in 2018. Just a few days ago, I tried to install an M.2 NVME SSD from Samsung, but it did not show up in BIOS at all. I am not sure what went wrong then or what I did wrong. Please guide me. Since this laptop is out of warranty, Acer could not offer any help. Thanks.

Whilst the recent threads I've seen about NVME drives have not specifically mentioned the Bios, I wonder if getting an NMVE driver ready to install during the installation procedure might help you as it helped users in other threads.

Source of necessary IRST driver - NavyLCdr #15 - ElevenForum

You then need to copy the driver to your installation USB and use a modified installation procedure to load it at the correct stage. This is described in

Go to the bios and look on which setting is the sata mode, it's either ahci or raid. put it on ahci if it is on raid and see if the sdd is detected.

How do you know the laptop supports NVMe? I bet it doesn't:

The SSD in the video is SATA.

Here he puts a crucial p2 nvme on the 315 51, but there are several references, here it's n17q1.

The ssd is not in the bios but you have gone further, ie boot on the windows install usb media?

Edit: Update the bios if you haven't already.

I had tried both RAID and AHCI, but it did not help, thanks.

Thanks but you seem to have missed NavyLCdr's reply [#4]. Have you checked in your specs that your computer is compatible with an M.2 NVME?
[Things vary, I have one computer that has an M.2 SATA and another with an M.2 NVME. I cannot swap these drives between my computers even though they are both 2280 of the same "B&M key" type.]

    Best of luck,

Navylcdr's message was surely not ignored by tech. As there are several models everything must be tried before giving up.

Yes, it does support an M.2 NVME SSD. 2 reasons. 1st I asked Acer at the time of purchase in 2018 and 2nd if you could please check the series of images I have already posted as a link in my original post, you will find one image/photo, which shows thee is one M.2 NVME slot. I may be wrong. But this is what I have to say in reply. Thanks.

I had also checked your photos very carefully but nowhere does it say that that takes NVME. It is clearly M.2 but I can see no mention of NVME in that photo.
You do realise that M.2 NVME & M.2 SATA card connectors look the same?
You need to check your specs to find out which type your M.2 connection is for.

Incidentally, you will normally get better responses by posting diagrams here the normal way.
Near the middle of the Editing toolbar that appears as you write your, post, click on the Insert image icon Can't install an M.2 SSD-insert-image-icon.jpg, browse to it, select it & upload it.
    - - When I want to post a diagram, I right-click on the file first, choose SendTo to put a shortcut on the Desktop.
    - - Then when I "browse to it, select it", it's always on the Desktop and the "browse" always opens there so it's both quicker and less error-prone.
    - - The TenForums Upload function has no problem with a shortcut being selected, it uploads the file itself without complaint.

    All the best,
    Denis
