Upgrading Storage On A Laptop (aspire e15 e5-575g-50mf)

    Hey all!

I'm looking to upgrade the storage on my little brothers laptop as the one we got with it came with a hard drive and I think said hard drive is on its way out. The laptop has a free m.2 slot but I wasn't sure on what kind it would need. I noticed there is a different between NVME and SATA m.2 drives and whether that might effect compatability as well as the key's, from the research that I did it also has room for the longest type of m.2 (i think). Any information on this would be appreciated. Thank you

Laptop in question: aspire e15 e5-575g-50mf

The Acer Aspire E5-575G series laptops support the use of a:
    SATA 3 2.5" 7.5mm or 9mm internal solid state drive(SSD)

If your brother's laptop currently has an internal hard disk drive(HDD), switching to a solid state drive(SSD) will be a good move because it will make his laptop faster and snappier.

What is the exact SNID number on his laptop?

There are online tools to help you select the right product e.g.

SSD Drive Buying Guide | Crucial.com

You should be able to find one relevant to your region...

You can check the state of his drive using Hard Disk Sentinel (informative result right on its GUI) or a basic SMART check using e.g. Crystal Diskinfo.

If there is corruption (attempting to image the drive would reveal that using Macrium Reflect) you won't reliably be able to readily transfer the current installation to a new disk, so you will need to check. If the drive is failing, you need to consider recovering and backing up what you can of course.

It seems that the Acer e15 e5-575g-50mf does NOT have a M.2 slot for NVMe.
But it has a SATA 3 HDD and a ODD (CD / DVD).
A SSD will make the laptop very fast.
    You have two options:
    - Replace the HDD with a 2.5" SATA SSD. The size depends on what the user wants to have. If you test the HDD and it is in good heath, you can buy a USB caddy to install the HDD to use it for backups. The cost (1T SSD+Caddy) is around US$ 100.
    - If you test the HDD and it is in good heath you can replace it with a small SSD (120G) and replace the ODD with a caddy to hold a the HDD to be used for Data only. The cost (120G SSD+Caddy) is around US$ 25.

    - 120G SSD
    - HDD HD Hard Drive Caddy Adapter For Laptop CD / DVD-ROM Optical Bay

    - 1T SSD
    - Crucial SSD (very good)
    - 2.5" USB 3.0 SATA External Hard Drive Enclosure

    Hello,

    Download hwinfo portable version:

    HWiNFO download latest version

run exe 64 if windows 64 or exe 32bits if windows 32 on acer computer.

Close all the small windows except the biggest, it's the main one.

In the tree on the left expand "BUS" then expand "PCI bus", then under "pci bus" click on each information ending "PCI Express Root Port #", when you are going to click on each pci express root port, in the part right of the window the information will be displayed. Capture the information for each pci express port and post the captures in this thread or an image site.

I can't even get windows to load up, keep getting "no bootable device". I was going to install the program to see it's status. When I try to install fresh windows it's just loops over and over (windows loading circle) as well. I'm pretty sure the hard drive is done.

    I'm looking at buying this - https://www.pccasegear.com/products/...sata-ssd-480gb

    @itsme1

I currently can't get into windows or install a fresh one.

Sorry for the late reply guys, was gathering intel, trying stuff out and busy in general, life aha. I managed to install windows after running diskpart and going through the neccesary procedures to format the drive, reassign letter etc. It wasn't appearing has a existing drive when I tried to install fresh windows, it is however visible in BIOS. I Installed a fresh copy of windows and all was well. Then after about a week I got the "No Bootable Device" error again which leads me to think the drive is done.

I'm going to buy a 2.5 SSD as I linked above and replace it with that. Currently looking at youtube videos on how to remove the back cover of the laptop.

I do have a couple of questions though. I've never swapped anything out in a laptop before. I have in a PC. Are there any safety precautions to practise before I go digging in the guts of the laptop? For example I know when changing parts in a PC you need to switch off the power supply or unplug from the wall and wait a few seconds. What to do in case of a laptop? Thanks :)

So I disassembled the back and found this. After doing some research and please correct me if I'm wrong but I can in fact use a m.2 ssd on this laptop? Furthermore, if my research is correct since the notch is on the right side that means I can also use a NVME? Because if it was on the left then I could only use a M.2 Sata correct?

How finnicky/compatible are m.2's? If I go and buy a NVME is there a chance it might not work? I'm keen to get a NMVE because at least I can take it out in the future and use it on something else. Currently saving to build him a PC :)

Looking at something like this - Crucial P2 500GB (CT500P2SSD8) M.2 (2280) NVMe PCIe QLC NAND SSD Solid State Drive

    Thanks <3

I bought a crucial mx not long ago for an old desktop which is better than the bx according to toms hardware .com tests. It is at the level of the Samsung evo...

I had done a search with the reference of your laptop it seems that it is nvme compatible but not in version 3.0 x4, a little less, which will always be faster than a sata 6 ssd. But you can buy an nvme 3.0 x4 to then put it in a new pc later. An m.2 ssd and nvme may not be compatible with your laptop and may not be detected or detected and randomly disappear and reappear in Windows. Still doing a search with your laptop reference I saw a youtube video, the person had installed a Samsung evo.

According to your photos the m.2 port has a key M which means pci express nvme and backward compatible ssd m.2 sata non nvme.

Sorry buddy I'm having a little trouble understanding. I'm not too savvy with specific tech stuff. So it isn't compatible?

Yes, it is compatible m.2 nvme ssd and non-nvme m.2 ssd.

As I saw a guy install an m.2 nvme samsung evo ssd on the reference of your laptop, a Samsung evo is recommended.
