Trying to hook SATA DVD through USB with no success

My computer has all 4 SATA ports already in use and so I don't have an extra one to connect my full size internal SATA DVD.

I tried to hook it through an USB port using one of those external USB HDD conectors with cables but it didn't work. The DVD lights up, opens and closes the tray but that's all. It doesn't spins the disc and also doesn't get recognized by the system.

    Any idea?

    Might be a different voltage.

Save it for emergencies...and grab an external DVD.

Honestly, I don't know why it doesn't work like that.
Just stick it in the closet for a rainy day.

Those ones in that link are USB 3.0, and they cost about the same as the internal variety.

    /edit

Another option would be to get a bigger internal SSD, to replace two smaller ones.

If it is a full-size desktop DVD ROM, it may require more power than the USB port can provide. It would need to go into an enclosure with it's own separate power supply. When installed internally, the DVD drive would be powered by a separate power cable directly from the power supply unit.

Agree... the only thing that comes to my mind is that the USB port cannot provide enough power for this. Anyway, I will order one of those external drives.

If you have two USB ports available you could try using a USB Y cable to increase the power.

I see you have a 320 and a 500GB HDD in there. Take them out and put a 2TB HDD in there...

$100 Western Digital BLACK SERIES 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (WD2003FZEX) - PCPartPicker

    $55 Seagate Barracuda Compute 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (ST2000DM008) - PCPartPicker

Or just replace the 320GB with a 2TB hard drive.

Just order that Seagate hard drive, and keep the regular DVD player in the computer.

Put the 320GB in the closet for emergencies.
