    Hi folks
Any Windows Gurus on Hard Disk management around here
Got a dubious HDD on a Linux NAS and also I think a failing one on a Windows Server box -- but is there an equivalent tool in Windows that gives similar info that I can use on the Windows server box :

    Here's the Linux thing :

I've googled around but can't find any info -- It's not possible easily to remove the HDD and put into the NAS box to run the diagnostic so that's why I'm looking for a Windows tool.

    Hi folks
Any Windows Gurus on Hard Disk management around here
Got a dubious HDD on a Linux NAS and also I think a failing one on a Windows Server box -- but is there an equivalent tool in Windows that gives similar info that I can use on the Windows server box :

    Here's the Linux thing :

    smartctl 7.1 2019-12-30 r5022 [x86_64-linux-5.9.1-arch1-1] (local build)

    Hi there
    Thanks

    Windows command is fine !!!

The HDD was defective -- part of a RAID 0 array so I will have to restore array from backup -- that's the problem with RAID 0 --you get much faster speed and better use of space but when it fails you lose the entire array -- however I've very rarely had HDD fails so the "reward to Risk" ratio in my case for using RAID 0 was OK.

(I think in over 20 years this is only the 2nd HDD that has gone bad on me - the trick though when using HDD's for this type of thing is to use robust server specific ones designed for 24/7 operation rather than the cheaper consumer grade stuff.

(To get 20TB of storage space using SSD's is still far too expensive currently !!!).

    Now marking as solved !!

    Cheers

For Windows and Linux you can use the free version of HD Sentinel.

Hard Disk Sentinel - Free Linux version
Hard Disk Sentinel - HDD health and temperature monitoring

Another option for Windows: Sea Tools

    SeaTools for Windows |
    Seagate

How to use SeaTools for Windows | Seagate Support US

SeaTools for DOS - Hard Drive Diagnostic
    SeaTools | Seagate Support US

We see drives that fail with 90% - 100% SMART.
So best to use other tests:

    Surface or error scan
    Short and long generic
    Short and long DST
    Benchmark
    Chkdsk
    etc.

Thanks for all that info -- great stuff

Am restoring now -- I understand 100% risks of RAID 0 so I always have backups -- I still see so many cases even on these forums where people get into incredible problems because they make the simple error of not having backups. !!

If I win the lottery !!! (same principle in most countries) - I'd buy some SAS type devices !! and the server systems to run them on.

    Anyway stay safe

    Cheers
