How to Check Health of Drive with SeaTools for DOS

SeaTools is an easy-to-use that helps you determine what could be wrong with your machine. This tool works with all hard drives (NOT SSDs).

This tutorial will show you how to launch the SeaTools for DOS HDD diagnostics from a disc using Windows Disc Burner.

Make sure you have your data backed up!

    Contents

    Part One

Download and Burn SeaTools for DOS to Disc

    1) You can download the ISO for SeaTools for DOS versions directly here:
    2) Insert a blank unformatted disc into your CD drive.

    3) Right click or press and hold on the Seatools ISO file, and click/tap on Burn disc image.

    4) Make sure you pick the correct DVD drive.

    Part Two

Boot from and Use SeaTools for DOS Disc

    7) To boot from your newly created disc, you can:
    • go into your BIOS and change the boot order to your disc drive
    • or you can use the BIOS boot menu option.

    8) Once the tool is all loaded you will see a License Agreement screen, click "I Accept"

    9) In this tool there are 3 different parts of the test. Most of the time short will be just fine; however, if you were advised to use the long test, then I would do so.

    • Short
    • Long
    • Acoustic

    Part Three

    SeaTools for DOS Results

    10) There are a few results you will get:

    Passed

If everything passes then you are good to go, and do not need to continue.

    Failed

    A) Select "Done"

    B) You will want to select the "Repair this one and ALL remaining" option. This will attempt to repair the bad sectors of the drive.

    Passed after repair
This means that it successfully repaired everything. Now that it has passed, your HDD should be good to go.

    Failed after Repair

If it fails after repair, then you cannot do anything but back up your data, and get a new drive.

I hope this was helpful! There will be edits to come to make this more informational!

Sea Tools for Dos is now a legacy tool:

Sea Tools has flash drive software to test drives that fail to boot Windows:

This can be used on SSDs.

I use SeaTools for Windows. Is it better to use the DOS version?

It appears that when the software were released it was related to access and drive repair.
Over time one software may have had more revisions than another.
Now the DOS product is legacy.

I use SeaTools for Windows. A few years ago, I tried to make the SeaTools for DOS boot disk but I never managed to get it to boot.

At the time, I didn't know about the new USB version of it, "SeaTools Bootable" 163MB, shown in SeaTools - Seagate Support
    - Downloadable SeaTools Bootable user manual UK, summarised in How to use SeaTools Bootable UK
    - Downloadable SeaTools Bootable user manual US, summarised in How to use SeaTools Bootable US
    - If you use neither English nor US English, you can use the link to your regional version of the pdf manual shown at the top of this page of the online version SeaTools Bootable User Manual - Save as pdf

One member has recently used SeaTools Bootable, so it does work.

    Steve,

This extract from the SeaTools for Windows online manual implied that SeaTools for DOS had to be used when there was a problem.
What do I do if my drive reports bad sectors - SeagateSupport
[also shown on page 8 of the pdf manual].

Since SeaTools for DOS is now a legacy product, I think the answer to your question is to use SeaTools for Windows.
    - But do consider SeaTools Bootable - see my previous post.
    - I'm not convinced that SeaTools for Windows is actively maintained any more - the pdf manual download link now is for a 2015 version but I already have a 2017 edition from their site that no longer appears there.

Windows 10 found a bad block on an eight year old hard drive which it fixed. A SeaTools for Windows full error scan showed no problems, chkdsk shows no errors and various utilities shows no SMART issues. I'm keeping my fingers crossed the disk isn't about to fail. The bad block error appeared after letting the Rockstar games utility transfer 100Gb of games data from the hard drive to a SSD.

I would still think about getting a replacement.
