    1) Create a free backup image using Macrium
    2) Save the image to another disk drive or the cloud

    3) Find a flash drive that you can format (> or = 8 GB)

    4) Create a bootable Windows 10 iso 1603

Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10

Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool
    TechBench by WZT (v4.1.1)

    5) Plan a clean install of Windows 1603 without an internet connection > test webcam

    6) Connect to the internet allowing Windows updates and Windows updates of non-Microsoft drivers > test webcam

    7) Add drivers from the HP website > test webcam

    8) If webcam does not function > open ticket HP forum > possibly replace or use alternative hardware

    9) If webcam functions > upgrade Windows to 2009 > retest webcam

    10) restore the Macrium image

I am facing exactly the same problem but with my HP Reverb G2 Virtual Reality Headset. I am curious to know whether this old version of Windows help to fix this type of issue? Are you able to fix the problem? I see no further response after provided suggestion to use 1609 or 1703:

Here is my complete post on Reddit about my issue.

    Hello,

I have recently performed clean windows 10 reinstall on HP elitebook 840 G5. The integrated webcam was working post windows reinstall, however it stopped working soon after windows automatic updates, etc. I tried to reinstall the driver in device manager but the webcam icon was frozen, so I removed the device and restarted the device and the integrated webcam device did not reinstall and is no longer visible in device manager. However under UBS controllers, an 'unknown USB device (device descriptor request failed)' is visible. I have tried to run all the troubleshoot options, however the webcam doesn't show anymore. I suppose these 2 things are linked? Would appreciate any suggestion to address this problem. Thanks!
I have the same issue on an HP ENVY 17-j020ss. Did you find a solution?
