Is a NVME Enclosure Required For Cloning?

I will be cloning my 2.5 inch samsung ssd that is in my dell xps 15 9550 into a new 1tb samsung 970 evo NVME ssd. I decided I will buy that ssd as oppose to the sk hynix. I know samsung has that migration software which works great for cloning. So i will use that as oppose to macrieum reflect.

Now can anyone here confirm... I need to buy this NVME enclosure to do the cloning ? Since im cloning from a 2.5 inch samsung sata to a new NVME drive... i assume i need this?

    Robot Check

I assume if you were to open up the laptop, take out the 32gb m.2 ssd that is already inside it... then put this one in...then close your laptop... then you don't need it and can clone it like that with the samsung migration software?

My plan is this... clone it myself with samsung migration software. Then once its cloned... i bring the nvme ssd, my new laptop battery, and new ram and bring it to repair shop and they will basically open up my laptop and take out the old parts and put in the new parts. I do not want them to do the cloning for me.

So can anyone here confirm I need to buy the nvme enclosure for this process? I assume i should in my case since i don't want to open my up laptop... as this would work if i take out the 32gb m.2 nvme already inside and put this in right? Thus if someone was tech savy, they would not need to buy the enclosure?

But with this... all i have to do is put the nvme ssd in this enclosure, plug it into the usb port... then clone and wait and thats all right? But someone tech savy wouldn't need to buy this as putting it inside the laptop and can do this clone process with taking the 32gb m.2 nvme out right?

I do have a 2.5 inch ssd enclosure if that matters. But i still need to buy the nvme enclosure right?

If you want to do the cloning yourself (before it goes into the PC) without opening the laptop, yes, you need a way to connect the new NVME SSD to the PC via USB and the enclosure takes care of that. To use your 2.5" enclosure (if it's SATA to USB), you would still need to by a NVME to SATA adapter.

Hi. Okay so this nvme enclosure takes care of that. But I don't even need to use my 2.5' enclosure right... since well my 2.5 inch ssd im going to copy from is already inside my laptop? Only reason i mention i have a 2.5' enclosure is because i bought it years ago because i wanted a way to connect a hard drive to my laptop and ppl years ago said get the 2.5' enclosure.

Thus if i want to do the cloning myself, without the repair shop doing it... just buy the nvme enclosure from the link above... then put the new nvme ssd into it... then plug it into usb port... use the samsung magician software and start cloning right?

But if i were to open the laptop myself... take out the 32gb m.2 nvme ssd that is already inside it... put the new 1tb nvme ssd in... then close up my computer. Then power it on... i could also do it that way? Only difference is with the nvme enclosure, i dont need to open it up myself right?

You say i still need a nvme to sata adapter if i want to use my 2.5' enclosure... but i dont need to do that in any part of the process here right?

If you clone it yourself, how would you know the clone actually worked and will boot the laptop---------BEFORE you take it to the shop to do the swap?

Do you know for a fact that the Samsung 970 will fit and mount properly in the same port now holding the 32 GB m.2 SSD?

What are the dimensions of this 32 GB m.2 SSD?

What do you mean it won't boot from an empty ssd? My 2.5 inch ssd would still be in there. The new 1tb nvme samsung ssd will be in there. The 32gb nvme m.2 ssd will be removed. There is only music files there, there is no windows app in it. If i were to remove the current 32gb m.2 ssd from my laptop now, im pretty certain it will boot up because my 2.5 inch samsung ssd is my main drive.

If I clone it myself... how would i know the clone actually will work? Ummm... when you check my pc and the c drive, wouldn't it show like 210gb used of 930gb in the new nvme ssd? That way you know its cloned right? Also couldn't you open some files from it or you cannot? Or only if you get that nvme enclosure?

The samsung 970 evo is a nvme drive. My laptop dell xps 15 9550 has a m.2 drive... so wouldn't that automatically work? I checked amazon reviews for the 970 evo and many ppl said it works with the 9560 and 7590 which are later models of the 9550... so shouldn't it work? I mean the nvme and m.2 is same size right?

No i dont know the exact dimension of the 32gb m.2 ssd... but i know its like a piece of gum.

Just that. No machine anywhere will boot from an empty drive. Where in your specs does it say what your boot drive is?

Please do a Disk Management screenshot and post. It will help all to understand your current drives and status a little better. Thanks.

There is a tutorial to help if you need it:
