Disk Partitions different in Win10 and Win8.1 ???

    So here's the thing.

I have an SSD which I have removed from one laptop (it's running Win8.1Pro) and connected it through a USB caddy to my other laptop (running Win10Pro 1909) so that I can move some data around.

To do this I shrink the "C" partition on the SSD and create a new partition from the empty space (shown as "E" in the screenshot below) in disk management on the Win10 laptop. I then copy around 200GB into this new drive, some from the Win10 laptop drive and some from the SSD "C" drive (shown as "D" in the screenshot).

Disk Partitions different in Win10 and Win8.1 ???-partition2.jpg

Now when I reinstall the SSD into the original Win8.1 laptop there is no new partition and it's as though nothing has happened to the disk, see below.

Disk Partitions different in Win10 and Win8.1 ???-partition1.jpg

When I put the SSD back in the USB disk caddy it shows up as the partitions in the first screenshot.

    What's going on?

When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

Open disk management > by default some columns are compressed > widen each Status and Volume > make sure the contents within the parenthesis are in full view and that none of the characters are cutoff > view disk 0 > widen this row as needed so that all of the characters are in full view > post an image into the thread

I assume you wanted me to do this while the SSD was connected to my Win10 laptop as USB drive.

If you are using Fast startup on the W8.1 PC, turn it off and restart (to ensure it has disconnected, so to speak), then look again.

Didn't realise this was going to be such an involved question. I just thought someone, who knows more than I, would tell me what I did wrong!

Will get the comparison sorted tomorrow as not about tonight.

Well, all I can say is "weird!!"

I just reinstalled the SSD into my win8.1 laptop to run the DISKPART scripts and screenshots so I can respond here, and the SSD partition structure all now looks as it should, and matches what shows in my Win10 machine, see below screenshots.

    Go figure!

Thanks for taking the time to look into this for me. I'd love to know how it sorted itself out but I'm not complaining now it works. Next step, install Win10Pro on the SSD.

    Cheers.

It may have needed a refresh / reboot.
    Glad to see the result.
    You are welcome.
