Issue on keyboard with ' and "

    Hello everyone,

Since yesterday I suddenly got a problem with my keyboard. It's about the characters ' and " .
Normally I press either of the one, then space and it's all good.
Now suddenly when I press the button it just places the character twice, even though I only press once.
    Like so: ""

When I Google about it I only see people talking about how they find it annoying that they have to press spacebar after the character, but that's not my issue. I actually wanna go back to that!

I restarted my PC, I replugged the keyboard. I also tried a different keyboard and the problem was still there.
It seems to be Windows related and not my keyboard. Also tried to change the language of my keyboard but that also didn't solve the issue. It currently is on United States (international).

I did not change anything on my computer. The only thing I can think of is that I might accidentally pressed some sort of key combination, although I doubt that exists since I couldn't find anything about it.

My keyboard: Trust Gaming GXT 830-RW Avonn
My OS: Windows 10 Home x64
    Windows Version number: 1909 (18363.1016)

I hope you can help me fix this issue. Thank you!

Investigate Sticky Keys and/or the repeat rate in Settings, Devices. What do you get when using the single quote and double quote when pressing the first letter of a word in the sentence?
Sample: 'now is the time' and "now is the time"
The only time I need the space with either is when going to the next word.

Hello Berton, thank you for your reply.

    My sticky keys are off.

My old situation was the following: I'd press ' + space to get the character once. I could also press ' + e to get é for example. I can't do that latter anymore.

The new situation is that if I press the key once I get the character twice, regardless of where in the sentence.
If I would want to repeat your sentence I would get ''now is the time'' or ""now is the time".

Maybe you'd have some luck with Keytweak? Download KeyTweak - MajorGeeks

    Hi Jacee,

This tool also shows the button as just a single ' .
Thank you for sharing this with me, but I would just like to solve the origin of the problem.
If I could somehow make it work with Keytweak then that's just a bypass.
I can't be the only one having this problem?

Btw, I just found out it's not only with ' and " , but also with ^ and ~ .
So it seems to be with all characters that would usually require a space after the character.

The requirement for pressing space after characters like ' " ~ and ^ is specific to a keyboard layout that includes accented characters. For example, if you have a UK English keyboard and add the English International layout then " followed by space gives ", while " followed by o produces ö.

Add or Remove Keyboard Layouts in Windows 10

What language keyboard do you have? And what keyboard layout(s) do you have set up?

It sounds like you keyboard layout is either corrupt, or an incorrect layout has been added. I would start by removing any extra keyboard layouts, then adding them back again.

You could also try each layout in turn to test whether it is just one that isn't working correctly. Press the WinKey plus the spacebar to toggle between layouts.

    Jasper,

    Ctrl and ' together followed by a / e / i / o / u often gives á / é / í / ó / ú depending on the application. I use MS Office Word [2007] and it behaves this way.

It does the same in WordPad, default English (US).

That is application specific, it's a built-in function in Office and WordPad. Try it in Notepad or in a reply on Ten Forums and it doesn't work. The 'accent character followed by space or letter' method is a standard function of keyboard layouts for specific languages (eg: the 'English International' layout) and works in all applications - except that it has stopped working for the OP and they want to fix it.

This is an older post, but sounds like it's related to this same issue:
