    Trouble with Behringer UMC202HD AI

    Hey guys;
    Windows 10 Pro current build:
    I have a Behringer UMC202HD audio interface.
It works fine most of the time, but sometimes after waking the computer from sleep, I have no sound, and the UMC disappears from the list of audio devices.
The problem can be fixed by unplugging the UMC from the USB port, then re-plugging.

A week or two ago I read that disabling USB selective suspend might help, so I did that.
The UMC did not disconnect again until today - again after I woke the computer from sleep.
When I went to advanced power settings, I found that USB selective suspend was again enabled.
I guess it was one of Windows updates that returned the setting to the default.

This really bugs me. The fact that I can set up my computer as I want, only to have Microsoft decide to break it with another update, which I did not ask for.
That is why I have turned off feature updates for the max (365 days) time and all other updates for 30 days.
I want to have the chance to create a partition image in case MS decided to break my Windows again.

And that is why I am writing this post while running Ubuntu 20.04, not Windows.
And the Behringer UMC works in Ubuntu - never disconnects!

If anyone has any suggestions for how I might get my AI to work properly in Windows, please let me know.

    Thanks
    Ultrarunner

    Hi
    1. The problem is caused by two main factors
One as you correctly say the Windows issue of certain usb devices not waking correctly from sleep

The other sides to the problem are Behringher not issuing an up to date driver for windows 10.The last one available is the driver for all OS for 7 to 10
and the motherboard you have, which has only usb2 and on the USB 3.0 ports they are generation 1, which is not fully compatible with Windows 10 latest version builds, and has indeed not been so for sometime.

The answer to the problem depends on how far you want to go

    1. The definite solution - do not sleep the computer. Windows 10 enters sleep state by default. Instead power down completely and put up with a slightly increased loading time.
Microsoft icon left of taskbar - right click -hold mouse on shut down hold down shift key and click shut down.
A complete shutdown and a complete boot loading drivers for the usb ports, which if they are NOT fully compliant with 10 either from the individual usb connected device or the usb hub itself they will often not load from sleep

    2. See this
Sleep States Available on your Windows 10 PC
explore using the cmd shown the sleep states available on your computer. When Windows 10 goes to sleep, the longer it spends in sleep the deeper sleep state it enters, depending on which sleep states are available - as on the point above.

    3. See this
Add USB 3 Link Power Management to Power Options in Windows

use the cmd shown to add in option 1 on the link and then open the power plan and set Minimum power savings - clicking apply and OK as required using the examples in this link
Change Power Plan Settings in Windows 10

    4. Finally the setting returning to selective suspend is I fear caused by the reason I mentioned at point 1. Selective suspend is the default setting on 10 and I doubt you will find an effective way to stop the system reverting to its default.

    Thanks for your help;
I had forgotten to update my system specs when I did my new build in April. I have done that now.
Since I am having the same issues with the Behringer UMC202HD on the new system as I did on the old, I think I can eliminate USB issues.

I ran the command to determine which sleep states my system supports:The following sleep states are available on this system:
    Standby (S3)
    Hibernate
    Hybrid Sleep
    Fast Startup

The following sleep states are not available on this system:
    Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

    Standby (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

    Standby (S0 Low Power Idle)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

I could simply shut down instead of using sleep, but with my dual-boot system, it takes longer to boot up. Currently Windows is the default selection in grub2, with a timeout of 15 seconds. I could shorten that to 5 seconds, but it's really not going to make a difference.
I like to use sleep to conserve power and still allow for quick startup when returning to the computer after a while away. i could just leave it running and blank the screen. I think my system is pretty efficient, so leaving it on with the monitors blanked will probably not use much more power than sleep mode. I could actually measure it if I want to go that far.

The last thing, but which is becoming a more likely scenario is that I will replace the Behringer UMC202HD with another AI of a different brand. I have been quite frustrated over Behringer's lack of support on this device, and there are some other things I don't like. It was inexpensive - around $50 a few years back. The only issue is that I hate to replace something that is still working if I can figure out a work-around. If shutting the computer down instead of using sleep is the solution, then I guess it makes sense to do that rather than go out and buy a new AI.

I have a home recording studio. I don't use sleep/standby/hibernate. I only "power off" the monitor after 30 minutes. I also have the power plan set to High Performance. I power the system up in the morning and power it off at night.

I use an MOTU 4pre currently for my recording interface unit. Better drivers and better latency than anything else that I've owned.

    Thanks for that info.
I checked out the reviews of the MOTU 4pre and it looks really good. But at $449 (Sweetwater) it's a bit out of my price range, considering I'm not even a musician - I only use the AI to listen to my music library and play around with a bit of MIDI (on Reaper virtual keyboard for now) piano and other stuff. I do need the low latency, but perhaps something between the UMC I own and the MOTU you own.

I would try connecting that Behringher to a front usb 2 port
See if that makes any difference.
I would also try, if that does not make a difference, the suggested step at my point 3 on my previous post.

If that makes no difference and this next suggestion is a little of a long shot, I suspect it could be ESET
I am sure you may think - how can it possibly be ESET
See if on your ESET there is - having opened the GUI of Eset a settings - in the left pane
then on the main window is there a control feature over removable media
I appreciate the Audio device is NOT removable media, but I do not of course know how Eset sees the device.

I have never personally liked using GRUB as the boot for 10 on dual boot with Linux, I have always preferred the Windows boot manager, although I appreciate of course that the usual way is to use GRUB, 10 being installed first

I don't have any USB2 ports. They're all USB3.x. I don't think plugging into a front port would make any difference, except that it would be easier to unplug / re-plug when the UMC stops working.
Also, I have only two front USB ports, and use them for temporary devices where I need to plug & unplug frequently.

According to the manual, for your motherboard as I read it, if there are front usb ports they are usb 2.0
    Perhaps I misread it.
    REAR I/O
    1 x PS/2 keyboard/mouse combo port(s)
    1 x DisplayPort
    1 x HDMI
    1 x LAN (RJ45) port(s)
    1 x Optical S/PDIF out
    5 x Audio jack(s)
    4 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 (up to 5Gbps) ports
    3 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 (up to 10Gbps) ports (Type-A + USB Type-CTM)

    ASUS Wi-Fi module (Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth v5.0)

unless of course the internal I/O header has been connected to provide two additional
1 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 (up to 5Gbps) connector support additional 2 USB ports
    on the front panel
    .

USB 2.0 ports often load from sleep state when usb 3.0 do not always do so
Additionally if you do not try my other suggestions, then I do not think as far as I am concerned we are going to make any progress

Right. I re-read the mobo manual, and yes, it does have USB 2.0 header. I do not believe I am using the USB 2.0 header though. When I connected the cable from the USB ports on the case, I believe I plugged it into the 20-pin connector at the edge of the board, which is USB 3.1. It was the only header the plug would fit onto.

I have followed your instructions to add the USB 3 Link Power Management.
I have changed my power plan from AMD Ryzen Balanced to High Performance.
Then I have changed advanced settings to disable USB selective suspend, and set USB 3 Link Power Management > Plugged in: to Minimum power savings.

Also, under Sleep, I have set Never.

I checked ESET, and didn't find any configuration for removable media.
However, when plugging in the Behringer, I never see an ESET message, as I do with my USB HDD and a USB DVD RW drive.

I have turned off Windows feature updates, so maybe the settings will stick for a while?

    Cheers
I would be interested to see how it goes with those settings
