    Windows 10 Won't Burn CD's or DVD's BUT Plays CDs/DVDs HELP!

So I tossed on a CD which played well, same with a DVD the movie played well too. But when I tried burning a blank CD using Windows Media Player it did not work, then I tried two other programs CDBurnerXP and ImgBurn neither one would work either. I am trying to burn MP3 files onto a blank CD to enjoy listening too in my car. So what's going on with my CD/DVD Drive? It did burn a CD for me a few months but now not sure what the issue is and need to know how to fix this problem! Find links to my screen shots of the issues below. I am running Version 1903 (OS Build 18362.778).

Open Device Manager. Is there any yellow alert of missing drivers?

It could be dirty optics or a batch of bad discs, or indeed both.
    1) If it is a Laptop type slimline drive where the optics comes out in the disc tray a relatively easy task if you do it very carefully.
    2) Change the brand and batch of Discs.

Hadn't done it in awhile but I just used a Notebook to Select 23 .mp3 files [about 70MB], right-clicked and chose Send to and then the CD/DVD drive with a 700MB disc. Windows Media Player opened and asked how to treat the disc, as a USB Thumb drive or a CD disc. I chose the disc since it was the CD-R type. Then the files were copied to the drive and appeared in the right column in WMP. I clicked the Burn icon in the toolbar. It took about 20 minutes total. To verify the work I took the disc to our Highlander, it played as it should.

I'll mention that the Notebook I used is a rehabbed Dell XPS L701x I was given a couple months ago and no history about what works or doesn't, didn't know until I did this test that the ODD/Optical Disc Drive is also a Blu-Ray [BD-ROM] player.

It's important to use only CD-R discs when using on "foreign" players, even though closed the CD-RW discs can be problematic.

The drive is clean, no dusk or lint or anything. Again my drive plays CDs and DVDs fine. But burning MP3 files to a blank CD, it will not work. It did work before but now not happening. And why waste money on MORE blank CDs and have this possibly happen again?

My Dell is a Dell Laptop Inspiron 17 5000 Series, which I've had for 1 year. It did burn a CD once last year. But now this year, it is not working. I have tried several of the MEMOREX blank CD's via Windows Media Player and it will not work.

The disc I used was a Memorex but not more than 5 years old. Did have issues with their colored discs about 15 or so years ago not working where white ones did, apparently the production got better since then.

If buying in the "cake boxes" of 25, 50 or 100 the cost is not much per each, usually less than $0.30. I don't use many nowadays, mostly DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD+R/DL [Dual Layer at up to 8GB].,

It's usually more costly to get a replacement ODD for Notebooks compared with a Desktop but another choice would be an External USB ODD, last one I got was about $50.00, use it when needed with the 3 Notebooks that don't have the drive. The difference between Notebook and Desktop drives is the face of the tray and the thickness [the fit], much more limiting for Notebooks.

Seems odd. As far as I know, the same lasers are used for reading and writing. (Different lasers are used for CD, DVD, and BluRay, as different wavelengths are required.) I don't know what failure mode would allow reading but not writing.

Please open Device Manager and tell us the model number for the CD/DVD drive.

If you needed to replace the drive, it need not be expensive. LG Ultra Slim 8X DVDRW - Model GTC0N - Newegg.com

    It's also fairly easy. https://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/insp...nual_en-us.pdf

Thanks. Just checking. Its specs are: PLDS DU-8A5LH CD DVD+/-RW Drive Burner - SATA

If it was my laptop, I'd remove the drive from Device Manager, and let the laptop re-detect it. I'm not hopeful about that, but it should do no harm.

"I am trying to burn MP3 files onto a blank CD to enjoy listening too in my car."

You need to burn these as an 'Audio CD' to play in the car. As a test, see if the CD that you 'burned' the mp3's to will play on your computer CD drive. You essentially made a 'Jukebox CD' as explained below.
I use Nero Express to make car CD's. {Note- you can, at most, usually only get up to 12 tracks, as conversion from mp3 takes up much more file size. Read the info in this screenshot when I want to set up an Audio CD burn -
