Hard Drive Keeps Freezing, BUT, Thumb Drive Works

There have been a lot of posts in this link and I'm making sure that everyone is on the same page.

The drive has failed Sea Tools for Windows long generic test.
This is a test that is similar to what computer manufactures use to confirm a failed drive for warranty replacement.

If the files are backed up the drive can be used until the terminal event.
It is typically best to replace the drive sooner to avoid performance problems.

I have commented on this some posts ago

5. That drive CANNOT be repaired. Despite what you may read, about fixing bad sectors, they are NOT fixed. They are with the use of some cmds or 3rd party programs/apps simply dealt with by copying the data from the bad sectors and writing it to good sectors. The bad sector is then marked bad to prevent other data being written to it.

6. When you have done that and even if you have not of course completed it we will take the NEXT step.

7. HOWEVER on the evidence available to date, not only the Seagate test, but all the other evidence the ONLY solution is to replace the drive.

8. Please post the full model of the Acer laptop from the plate on the base, or underneath the battery if it is of the removable sort AND the serial number of the laptop from the same plate. so that I may advise you of the procedure to change the drive, when you get to that stage.

and also then explained the procedure of attempting the repair install to see the user over until he replaces the drive.

As you know it failed the test on Seagate, but I have known drives fail that when there have been only a very few bad sectors.

Hope fully if the problems are not bad this will get you back working on 10 and then you can see how matters progress over a couple of days and if problems return you should order a new drive ASAP.
I will guide you on that as necessary.

Re your last I know, we have discussed that - F2 does nothing
If you read the details for the Acer I sent, irrespective of F2 doing nothing, which it will NOT unless you do it via restart you still have to follow the guide on the Acer for creating the password for UEFI setup in order to allow you to make the change from secure boot
ENABLED to
DISABLED

That can be done from the access to setup via settings, etc on 10 as you got into it before.

HOWEVER as I have said, twice, please try the repair without that secure boot disabled, as I believe it will still work.


BEFORE you start, READ the guide from this site, that I sent written by Brink and make certain you now which to click on when you start the repair install

MAKE certain your laptop is connected to power not just battery
and
make certain you choose
what to keep etc -
AND PLEASE take it slowly.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

When you are ready you right click the ISO file, you click MOUNT
it then appears as a virtual drive
You then double click setup

HOWEVER I repeat again, read the guide above.

Please backup files as soon as possible or confirm that you have already backed up all important files.

What you REALLY do need to do now is
1. Secure your personal data, any pictures, docs and music files you need from those folders .

2. COPY only a few at a time, do NOT try and copy the whole contents of the user folder.
Copy only the files for the music, pics and docs.

3. I DO NOT advise you to use some third party backup image software such as Macrium, good as that is, it MAY in an attempt to make a full backup or image, push that drive over the edge, and you would need another drive connected to the laptop by USB to make that backup or image

4. Use your USB flash pen.
HOWEVER you will of course still need somewhere to copy these items to from the flash pen.

I have already covered it
and also additionally covered the aspect of other material to be considered for backup.

Ok, I got it! You said restart (the guide said SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY). THEY were wrong, YOU were right. F2 worked fine.

Do not worry yourself, please
RESTART is one way of making a complete shutdown.
Normal shutdown in windows 10 is not a complete shutdown.
I will explain that further when we have sorted out the rest of the problems.
