I just meant, replacing the icon with the blank page. Which one is uglier?

@pp001 it won't be woring for long, unless MS has fixed the server
Exactly. I think they fixed the server, only I had to "reset" my files in order to make it obvious.

They didn't afaik. My computer is still fetching wrong metadata. Last night, after your comment, i plugged a new flash drive on my laptop, it showed the right icon and name, then i opened "Devices and printers" and immediately changed to the wrong version. Remember that one way of forcing metadata retrieval is by opening that window.

    Edit:
By the way, you said you messed with the metadata cache. Did you by any chance disable the metadata retrieval feature? That would also explain it.

Well, I did some testing during last days, that's why I said I had to reset it all... I deleted those files, GPO thingy is at default settings, delete %temp% in your OS, reboot. It may take some time, can't remember, but my machines are doing OK now.
    ****edit***
deleting %temp% is important, won't work w\o it

The only workaround is below (or from gpedit):

USB drives displaying weird icons (i believe in usb 3.0 ports only)-ahr0cdovl3d3dy5syxb0b3btywcuy29tl2ltywdlcy93cc9wdxjjac1hcgkvaw5jb250zw50lziwmtcvmdivagvyb18zmdyy.png

This is not fixed and when you connect to internet with the option enable it downloads wrong icons.
Simple answer that it is not on your end and will be fixed from Microsoft when they fix the metadata servers.

OK, then, I don't know how my icons got fixed, but they definitely look OK. Any statement I make would be just guessing.

If they were broken before, not downloading more broken ones will not fix the ones already broken.

You said you unchecked it, so I do not understand. My point is, if the icons are messed up now, selecting to not download icons will not repair any already broken icons.
