USB Flash stick / portable hard drvies , is it only a myth?

For years, from time to time, I have been hearing some people telling me that "If you don't "safely eject" the USB stick or portable hard drives" and you only unplug them, your drive will fail more easily in the future..........i.e. shorter lifespan....which would "hurt" hardware inside the drives

Is it real? or totally wrong? or it could be possible depending on the brand and build quality of your drive?

Anyone can confirm to me? Thanks a lot !

Safe Eject is a drive option and AFAIK its function is to ensure that the write cache for the device has been flushed to the device.

Most USB storage devices have a light blinking while writing/reading is going on, If you wait a bit until it stops or few seconds after long file transfer/write you can disconnect without "safely eject", I haven't done it in years and no problems. Devices other than storage may appear to be still there and active unless "safely eject" is invoked but if they don't, no problem either.
